BSC Young Boys 4 Celtic Glasgow 1

So it’s probably time to sack the manager, sell the entire team and sack the board. Donati is pants, so is Virgo and the quicker we send JFK on loan the better. Is that the current feeling amongst the Hoopy hoards on the tinternet?

I would hope not. I have abstained from looking at Celtic sites since 8.20pm on Saturday night. Ye see, the supports reaction is strangely expected and worrying. It has been that way since we have been blessed wie success and landed wie a manager that rubs, certain people up the wrong way.

Thing is, oor trip to the land of the cuckoo has served it’s purpose. All fit players in the squad given a run oot against opponents who were up for it and further on at this stage of the pre-season. A victory and a defeat, not as heavy as the scoreline suggests, is not the end of the world. In fact the second game ended exactly wie the type of performance i expected.

Ye see, two games in three games along wie hefty training sessions are only conducive to improving stamina and sharpness. Against teams who are up for it, see the meaty challenges that went unpunished by the homer of the ref in the second game, and who were fitter and sharper the last 20mins of games were always going to be a fly by the seat of yer pants case.

Basel couldnae punish us, fact is the backline that finished the Basel game looked a lot more solid than the backline that finished the Young Boys game, but Young Boys did wie two goals in the last two minutes when the hoops team were trying to get themselves back into the game but the legs, touch and sharpness just weren’t there.

We were stretched at the final two goals, which gave the scoreline a flattering look to the average Swiss side. Hakin Yakin no longer looks like a yeti but still proved to leave the bhoys wie thorns in their sides after two easy shootie in chances for him.

From the start the Hoops play was slack. Passes going astray, passes short we just looked oot of sorts from the word go. We looked heavy legged and weary. Young Boys were up for the Urehin Cup while the fact we used 20 players probably belittled their enthusiasm.

Oor two best chances, one was the goal and Balde’s free heider, came from set plays. The other night we created chances through decent fitbaw and wing play from the full backs. On Saturday Barney played full back, to great aplomb but he is a midfielder, and this shows the lack of options we have in this area. Fullback is a position that is paramount to GS tactical vision but the lack of attention getting paid to it is worrying.

In the second half, after 8 changes at half time, we looked mair disjointed as the game progressed. The Swiss got fitter and the Hoops got weaker. Apart from flashes of skillfull wing play from Barney- the only bright spot and player too get passmarks- and Aiden we created nothing. We had a wee spell when we kept the baw for a period but oor final baw was non-existent and at no time did we look like scoring.

The maist annoying thing aboot Saturday was listening to Jock Broon gloating over the abject second half. He was enjoying it and he could hardly contain his joy when “former r*ngers target” Hakin Yakin scored two late goals.

It’s pre-season ye div. Has history not told you that the hoops, historically in pre-season have been pants and in fact that we have scored two goals in two games means that this pre-season oot-shines last years pre-season?

When we roll up to Peterbourgh on Friday we will have another week of pre-season under the belts. The players should by then be aiming for at least looking sharper and lasting a lot longer in games before blowing oot their arses after 60 or 70 mins.

Stage two of pre-season starts today and maybe now we are back on home soil GS and the SSM will be hammering their mobiles trying to offload and recruit. Maybe oor Swiss trip will be the last time we see some in the Hoops.

Forza The Hoops

Morning

Back from the States at the weekend, straight round Dad's to watch the natch after no sleep for 36 hours - no matter what it was poor.

The stuff about training nand tiredness I don't get. These guys are supposed to be athletes.

We now have the AFL Coach on our books, been there for what 6 months now and we should be seeing the benefits now. AFL Players train like mad, for about an hour before and after their games in their warm ups and warm downs, even when the temp is hitting the 90's. They view training as a job, 8 hours a day not like the 3-4 hours most footballers in the UK seem to think is acceptable.

These guys are getting paid £10-£20K a week on average, and some seem to have come back from their few weeks off unfit. Graveson was a disgrace, no matter who the opposition was.

For Professional Athletes now, pre-season should only be a case of fine tuning, the days when Stein had players running up and down the Beaches in Ayreshire after their 4 weeks off are gone.

I played Rugby for a Senior Club, we used to train on our tours all morning and then play games in the afternoon against local teams. Still had to win, saying you were tired because you had done a bit of running in the morning was not an acceptable excuse.

Disappointed we have lost, but am going to both London Rd and Loftus Rd this weekend, will be a sore loser if we don't at least give a decent account of ourselves.

BTW was in Orlando and saw the Hoops everywhere. Great Celtic pub by the way in the Lucky Leprachaun. You could buy Hoops in almost all Sports stores with Man U, Brazil, Mexico and the US National Strips also available, while I didn't see any Chelsea or TFOD strips for sale.

In Sports Dominator on Internationmal Drive, near Disney, there were racks of Hoops and Training Gear plus loads of Celtic Footballs. We really have got our brand out in a strong position in the States, I really hope we don't make a mess of it by not trying when we play live on US TV against Chicago and LA Galaxy. This is a real opportunity to build something here for us and get more people really interested in our Club.

Hope everyone OK

Welcome back Baldy..was lonely there for a while...:-0

Take yer point regarding the players are meant to be athletes, they should not come back unfit, which having watched the both games i don’t think they have come back unfit, they lack sharpness both physically and mentally and the stamina but for me, that’s what pre-season is aboot fine tuning these attributes.

Yer AFL point, now it’s a bit like trying to make a leopard change it’s spots. We have pampered players who as you say see 3-4 hours as a hard chore while other athletes in other sports see 8 hours a day as norm.

You will have to catch them young to change that attitude and hopefully the AFL bloke will be working wie the yoof’s as well as the 1st team.

There was bloke on Talksport last week said that professional athletes only need to weeks R & R and then they should have individual programs tailored to their needs for the season ahead.

His example was Stevie G has natural stamina, while Bellars has natural speed and sharpness. Now having them doing the same training program all the time is not benefiting their weak areas.

Being tired is no excuse granted, but in sport all over the world the sharper, fitter and hungrier team usually win. That was the case on Saturday and it was the case on the Thursday when fitbaw watchers say Celtic were a lot fitter then expected.

Right we lost two late goals, looked sluggish and heavy legged. But last season we benefited from the same set of circs. How many late goals did we score and how many times during that did we look like the fitter team, esp the cup final.

Friday and Sunday i’m looking for an improvement. We should get an improvement and does anyone know where i can watch the game on Sunday in Belfast?

Great to hear that aboot the merchandise. The Nike factor is defo now working. Agree we need to put on a show in the two games across there. While on the playing front again, it’s nuthin bar a training exercise to oor Nikee and PR dept it’s the real deal.

Now here’s the big news....i’m being connected to the net at home tomorrow, so free from the IT meanies expected late night x-rated LOTW postings from a slightly worse for wear after games blogger in the coming season.....

Baldy will be delighted if you tell us aboot yer experience at London Road and Loftus and if ye meet a group fae Milton Keynes at QPR, a wee small bloke, bald wie a goatee is a distant relation thru mrs G.....he is no reflection of me......

Oh, i never really explained ma Stevie G and Bellars thing..

What i meant was it's hard to find the balance. It would bother some players to train then play but not others.

If the changes to the team meant the majority didnae fancy playing after training then yer in trouble. In the first half maybe the team contained mair players that it didnae bother as they have natural stamina?

Could all be bolloxs and they are just lazy B's right enough....

Now, i thought i would commit this one to print as it came to me.....

Since Man Citee have signed an Italian striker for a shedload of cash..how long do you think it will be before the meeja link us wie the greek striker samaris(sp)?

And does anyone like me think GS will fancy the cut price striker? I'm sure he was keen last year....

Hi KevG
Didn't get to see the game, only caught a glimpse of the scoreline on my way to bed as we got back late. I only realized next morning that the 4-1 wasn't in our favour!
Don't think it would have disturbed my sleep anyway.

Pretty quiet week on the outside looking in, but I'm pretty sure the phones are red hot trying to offload some of the surplus and trying to get some more new blood in.

By all accounts, TG seems to be shooting himself in the foot. I think everybody agrees it's time to part company - but what a wasted talent.

Hopefully when he takes his taxi he will take a few mates with him.
Pressley, Miller and Bobo spring to mind.

As for the new blood, prioriry is cover for full back and a class A striker.
Don't think we will see a new centre-back even if we do offload Elvis & Bobo.

Over in Govan, they are just securing their latest WOW signing: Lee McC, the five bob man.

Wattie is building a team of hammer-throwers but not only that: it's hammer-throwers who would die (that is, kill) for the cause.
Cue for refs in new home and away aprons.

That's my only concern for next season.
As Big Jock used to say:
If you want to win the League, it's not enough to be better than them, you've got to be MUCH better.

Won't be able to see Friday's friendly, so I'll look forward as usual to seeing yer report, Kevin.

PS
For the BaldyMeister,I've got "soccer playing" nephews and neices in Canada taht I keep supplied in Celtic tops and they are the envy of all their team mates. For some reason, it is impossible to get Celtic gear out there (talking about places like Vancouver and Calgary).
With the big Scots/Irish diaspora out there you would think we would have outlets. Any idea why not?
"Soccer" is really taking off with the youngsters.
