Ssssh…It’s All-Quiet In The East End
Now, most teams have no returned to pre-season training and managers have had time to have wee conflabs wie their chairmen, chief exec’s or dodgy new owners. These conversations, especially in the EPL and the other assorted English clubs, will be aboot wonga, spondolicks and how to pish it up against the wall.
Sixteen million for Darren Bent, where’s ma cheque book. Over five million for Jason Komas, nae probs, here give him thirty five thousand pound a week as he will need a sweetener to park up in the Lancashire oasis of Wigan.
Wie the top order, breaking record transfer fee’s on a regular basis, the middle order and the have nots in the EPL have raised the bar, for all, by paying OTT fees and wages for, on the face of it, very average players. Before the lure of the Champions League, 60,000 fans and the chance to win honors, not the cash for kind, and the chance to play for one of the biggest clubs in Britain would attract players.
Chris Sutton, Neil Lennon and Alan Thompson, if they were available now- at the age and height of their powers at the time we signed them- we wouldnae have a hope of attracting them to the SPL. A Fulham, Wigan, West Ham, Villa or a Portsmouth would pay a massive fee and give them 60,000 reasons a week to fight relegation or stagnate in mid table nothing-ness.
Perfect example this week is Craig Bellamy. When Bellars was on loan at the Hoops when it came to signing permanently, the rumored stumbling block, was his insistence that a clause was inserted in his contract that allowed him to leave if a Champs League club came in wie six million. Rumors this close season were off that Bellars said he had unfinished business up here and money widnae be a problem.
But money was a problem. The money Liverpool wanted ruled oot any notion that the Hoops would even be in the running to sign him. The money Liverpool asked for him was deemed too much for a lot, Villa especially, of potential suitors and thus Bellars principals that European fitbaw is a must gave way to I’ll take a massive wage, a downward step and make noises aboot the Irons having European potential to convince maself that I’m here for the long haul in a team that is going places.
I’m disappointed Bellars didnae return but I fully understand, dinny accept mind you, why it didnae happen. A player of his ilk and the fact he knows what the club is aboot made him ma perfect WOW signing, as long as he stayed off the karaoke and didnae take his golf clubs on pre-season wie him. Thing is players like Bellars are at the top end off oor market. A player that we would need to go oot on a limb for. A budget-blowing coup that would steal he summer headlines, like Skoosh Broon his close season.
But he is not top drawer enough for the big teams in England, as his spell at Liverpool has proved, they are looking to a different level and Bellars is not of that quality, but any other club in the EPL and wie us, he is the bloody star and he is he dugs bollocks.
Thing is players wie Bellars experience and reputation that has been honed after years and years of scoring in the EPL and CL are now longer on oor shopping lists. The fee’s and wages are oot oor control and even if a player decided he wished to further his career at the Hoops, cause let face it we are surely a better fitbawin option than a Wigan or Fulham, we widnae even be able to sit at the table show oor hand.
Oor predicament is highlighted by oor posturing at the moment. It’s so quiet at CP that I would take any rumor at the moment no matter how outlandish it is. We still require to buy, a striker and full back cover, while getting rid off the proverbial deadwood. The fact of the matter is the SSM and GS should be pouring over offers for oor players, as getting rid is now paramount to us recruiting.
While, I think the fees for players are gathering interest in the bank, the problem is paying the wages. A three million deal means the same in potential earnings for the player, which means a three million gap, or a Tommy G or a Jaro, the suits must find.
Celtic can’t be seen to be desperate. Oor public statements declaring love for all oor squad is only rouse to allow us to charge top dollar for the not wanted. But the other suits in other clubs are not daft. Look at oor neebours in the west dealings this summer. Desperation means paying inflated fees, while a cool as cats demeanor leaves business partners sweating on oor hand and commitment to he deal.
Problem is everyman and his dug knows that us removing the Grav and his massive pay as you play incentives is oor main aim. The fact that clubs have been sniffing means that we have an asset who is generating interest but an asset whom is in a strong position wie regards to getting paid off.
The closer we get to the deadline for signing players to participate in the CL, the mair fraught oor dealings will be. If Grav canny be moved, then others may have to be sold to create the wages gap, or we pay him off weakening oor offers for others and oor long-term targets clubs may get jumpy wie the threat of money being withdrawn for unsettled players.
Unless this game of poker changes soon, I don’t expect any movement, rumors or bullshit to hit oor screens or backpages until close to the August D-Date. This taking care of business in oor world takes a lot longer than in the money laden English leagues.

Evening lads..notice the time….i’m on line fae the comfort of ma living room!!!!!
Now, there is a ying and yang to this..one handed typing ye see I’ve got a pre season injury…..broke wrist playing 5’s so typing is a bugger..it took me 3 hours to type the rubbish you hav just read…
Anyway will be setting up n e-mail addy which will appear in ma profile soon, any contributions are welcome as lotw is now an open page….rant away.
Last thread….
Sixtaeseven- yer comment proceeded article, spooky regardin offloadin.
Luv yer Big jock quote.
Friday I don’t think it will be on tv, so baldy, if he is up for may b he best bet for a review…I was hoping you here watching it on c67 to keep me updated!!!!
Sorry aboot the slang txt speak I ill get used to one handedness…..
Congrats for the picture on the blog. The photies in 07/08 will kinda compensate for the general gothic look :o)
I have no qualms (zat a word?) about being elsewhere for the next game cos C67 have just announced that the 2 next games are audio only. SO we'll just forget about that...
So I'm having a "low profile" approach to these 2 games (i.e. if we win, we have a belter of a squad, bring it on, CL qualifiers a doddle, etc; if we lose, these games don't mean a thing, match fitness, fine tuning, etc).
I will have a real problem if we draw - ha ha.
I wil get interested in the next games however, in the States. Hopefully we will put on a show for the bhoys over there. Far too often, we go there and are mince.
I can just imagine guys taking their wee boys to those matches, full of stories and talk about the Celtic way, only for us to be mega-rotten.
It's all very well filling the coffers and trying to sell merchandise but you've got to keep the punters happy.
Another Big Jock saying "The most important people in football, are the fans."
I hope the wee GS is taking notes, because the same entertainment level as the last two years won't be enough - trophies or no trophies.
fully agree, we need to put a show on in the states..but i want to see an improvement in the next two games.
the QPR game is on setanta- thanks seven for the name of the boozer in Belfast to watch it- i'm hoping to see that.
Freddy Adu? i'm going to contact ma DC Centres web mates for goss after i go to hospital to get ma fit to fly cert.
entertainment six....now we just might just been as greedy wanting that and trophies...
less gothic mair cetic?
well seeing i'm bored and off work....:-)
Aaah, easier on the eye.
Yes, I think I meant to say "the same entertainment level as the last two years won't be enough even if we do win trophies".
There was a lot of grumbling from the fans during the last couple of months of last season. It could build up if we don't see a change in style this year. But the likes of Skoosh show we're going in the right direction, I think.
And yes, we DO have the right to be greedy.
Freddy Adu - an entertainer by all accounts- a winger who could put in some decent crosses for our frontmen. And if you're good neough, you're old enough.
Can't see it though.
yer right, the end of season apathy was felt by both the players and management as GS and Aiden have both come oot and said as much
much of the problem last year for me concerned the middle of the park, which hopefully will be sorted this season.
the lack of a full back on the right an Naylor losing form also hindered us..we need cover in this area as much as we need pace in the midfield.
skoosh could sort oot the middle and hopefully Aiden, Naka and Deek are mair conistant from wide.
having read the offending adu article i smell an agent spreading dung. it's a non story..but nice to see itv calling adu "the one time wonder kid of american soccer"
the signing of Adu would hieghten oor profile in the states to a further level..but can't see it happening.
More than happy to write a few notes here after tonight.
Really looking forward to the game. Not expecting to win (can't believe I am writing that about Celtic v Peterbrough) but do expect the team to try.
Adu - If we do sign him, I hope it will be because of his ability rather than his potential 'marketability' in the US. Man Yoo and Chelsea have apparently had him on trial and nothing come of that so I am really wondering - how good is he really?
All the best
baldy
baldy i'll look forward to yer match report, i have noticed the QPR game has been taken off Setanta's listings.
so yer probably going to be the man in the now again.
i read yer stooshie on CQN concerning GS at Cov. yer mate Kitalba forgot to say that ye did mention GS made a net profit from transfers..but ye can peddle facts and figures unti yer heart is content..personal opinion and 1st hand experience is what it is all aboot....
enjoy watching the hoops tonight and i'm sure we will beat the posh..
i'm listening to a cov band at the moment..the enemy..guid stuff very much wants to be paul weller the boy....
Kevin -- sent you an email... I accidentally deleted yours. Drop me a line with whatever you wanted to discuss. I beg forgiveness for being an idiot.
My bro likes the enemy - not sure if he knows them - he sort of manages a band in the city when they are between labels - so seems to get invited to all the big parties.
Look regarding WGS, he left Cov after telling everyone he was going to stay and fight and bring them back up. Pre-season after relegation was apparently a joke, his attitude and the players was terrible. His comments to the press/fans were not exactly clever - his usual 'I know best attitude'. He left the club in a state, Neilsson who took over was left with no money to spend - WGS had spent what was available in the Summer and Cov never recovered as a team. But what do I know or my mates. I think that because I pulled Paul up with his 'Telfer will not sign', he holds a grudge. Whenever I posted recently, I seem to get a slagging off him. Oh well shame, but I will just read 'the Collective' from time to time and I'll post here if that is OK. Don't remember ever quoting that we would lose the league - not that I ever would. Believe that I said if we played with the same lack of conviction we would be lucky to winn anything and to be honest we seriously rode our luck last year in certain games.
My previous three bosses were all season ticket holders, one is head of a business strategy research unit at the Uni. They have all got pretty good contacts with the Club and believe me they would not have WGS back for anything. I have not said WGS should go, you don't sack a winning manager but I will be interested to see what happens this year with TFOD, they just can't collapse like they have the last 2 years.
Right last night.
Starting team was Brown, Wilson, Nails, Elvis and Mick at the back. Capone (LM), Skoosh and Donati in the centre and Jim O'Brien (RM) with JVOH and Skippy.
Had about 3000 fans there last night, I missed the official crowd figs but we had the away terrace and had fans in both stands plus we could see a number of hoops in the home terrace opposite. Green Brigade in full voice, with flags and flares created a nice noise from our end but we had a number of idiots last night in attendance. Two peed up morons started fighting behind me and Marie, butting and punches thrown. To be honest they fought like girls, Fifi the flower tot would have had them. Both ejected thank God but what annoyed me was the mates of the one who started the fight, just letting him get on with it. They were as bigger morons IMO.
Earlier when we went looking for a prematch drink, two Neds claiming to be part of the CSC (Presume that is John O'Kanes Celtic Soccer Crew) were walking about trying to pick a fight with some local kids. To be honest if they had started I had already told Marie I was going to help the Boro' fans. Same guys some how got in the game and were abusing the staff and one was lifted for drunken behaviour - how the hell he got in though is a mystery. As an aside you have a greater liklihood getting a drink in Lynchberg, Tennessee than in Peterbrough. Compared to Rugby, the place is dry!
To the game started with usual pitter patter game, and Peterboro' were quickly in our faces. Capone was tackled late twice and defensively he looked suspect. Definately deserves a longer look though - physically he reminds me of Stephane Bonnes though which is worrying.
We won a free on the left in their half for a late challenge (again on Capone), Nails swung it over, JVOH climbed well at the back and Skippy half volleyed it away brilliantly (1-0).
Two minutes later a long ball into our CBs was not cleared by either. Their big Centre forwards just waltzed through soft challenges by Mick, Skoosh and Elvis (Nails and Capone had not looked too clever with soft tackilng earlier in the play) and they bundled it in. The guy next to me was bawling at Brown, saying he had soft hands but to be honest I don't know. I was too busy bawling at the softness of our tackling - you are more likely to get injured in a half-hearted challenge than in a full blooded one. Surely they should be told that or should know that.
They had further chances before half time time and we were lucky that one chance hit the side netting as he should have scored - I think that was Trevor Benjamin.
We had one half chance after O'Brien's good work on the right but after some good interchange it ended with J O'B putting the ball out of the stadium to some big cheers.
Halftime 1-1
No changes in line up but what a difference in attitude. Skoosh and Donati started breaking forward, interchanging well. The whole team looked as if it had been bollocked and to be fair they responded well.
Passing became crisper and the ball was being kept better, chances were being created. After one attack (not a set play I might add) after great work from Skippy running the defence, the ball came out to JO'B on the corner of the box and he struck it first tiome with the outside of his foot into the corner of the net. Cue massive smiles and cheers (2-1)
After we made a few changes. Skoosh, Donati and JVOH went off for Jiri, Hartley and Killen. All played well and created a few chances. Skippy had two goals chalked off for offside and he wasn't happy but the Tims on the touchline were not giving the lino much stick, so I presume he must have been right but it must have been close.
More subs were made with Capone replaced by Teddy, Willow by Caddis (who showed some great running) and I think JFK came on for a late run out as well. Not sure but however the players seemed determined to win and that is all I and the others from all over England with the buses from the Saltmarket want.
Very pleased with the way the game panned out and believe me, like the Chelsea game last year we will have gained more from that than messing about like we have in many others with wholesale changes and no rhythm or pattern developed.
Indeed pattern was something that was in evidence in that second half and I am very pleased with that. If WGS develops from that I will be happy.
After the game, it did though apparently kick off. My bro went back with the Green Brigade back to the City Centre, before heading back to Mockney land and he said he didn't see much. However on leaving the ground there were a fleet of police wagons and dog handlers come flying past us as we walked back to the car park. Heard rumours that some Headhunters came looking for trouble, but to be honest I don't know.
Read a report on News now from Mon the Hoops and I think he was being harsh about the second half and credit is due to the fact that they did play better. Plus Peterboro would probably be an SPL team if up here. They are no worse than the Pars in terms of quality.
QPR tomorrow, there will be less of a report as I will be drinking, last night I was driving so apologies in advance.
Hail hail
baldy
Just spoke to bro, apparently police were way out of order at the station, dog out of control, 8 arrested and pepperspray used.
Apart from that don't know about the rest.
baldy
Thanks, Baldy - that's what I call a report :o)
Look forward to reading more like it!
Ah bollox just lost my entire match report. too drunk to start rewriting it. We were good played like we did in the second half friday. Will write in from work tomorrow.
however on a sorry note had reports of a lot of trouble down there in Shepherds Bush - Headhunters involved.
hope everyone gets home safely.
Hailhail
Baldy- fantastic report..traveling wie the hoops means that there is times when the worst of scottish culture comes ot to play.
Chewin the fat syndrome mixed wie buckie and lager. last season in milan i left the doume square due to the behaviour of some
The London trip would always be a fraught one. Chelsea or any other mob luv to hav go at the "taigs" on home turf.
Have wee look on you tube under celtic soccer crew at chelsea to see how we make oorselves targets and also to find some laughable macho posturin from neds full of bevvy.
glad the green parade put on a show, suppose the flares will be another reason for the beaks at cp to try and ban them and i hope yer bro was ok after shepards bush.
oh and yer more and welcome to post here..enjoy yer posts and they are honest, which is rare on some sites.
to the games, nice to hear a faster style of play developing and goals being scored. nice to hearbthe attitude is right
skippy and broon seemed to hve settled well..could skippy be the suprise of the season?
How did O'Brien look? Must be a sickner for Deek seeing him gettin a run oot before him.
Did Capone do enough to warrent a trip to the states?
anyway, bed now for me, back from belfast, where last weeks orangefest was billed as family fun filled entertainment by the belfast tourist board, choked wie the cold and ma broken wrist throbbing.....at least the hoops are winning..
Still not had time to rewrite my lost post. Was really chuffed had done my first full match report.
Capone, to me yeah deserves a trip to the States for a further look but as yet on what i have seen he doesn't deserve a contract as yet.
Skippy could well be the missing man that we have been crying out for. He will make the SPL fare more entertaining and he has the killer instinct we have needed in order to kill teams off. Don't know if he will do it in the CL as their faster defenders may well pick him up easily however he has that bit of attitude and willingness to go in where it hurts that already from what i have seen really happy.
We played really well on Sunday, it was good. the goals are on Youtube and to be honest the only disappointing moments were JVOH's pen and Naylor's soft tackling that led top their goal.
JFK was magnificent!! Simple as.
Apparently Darren Ferguson, Boro's manager attended the QPR match and I wonder if he was looking at any of our lads (Loan perhaps). It was noticeable that Gary Irvine came on and did cometently.
Spoke to my bro yesterday and he told me that the Peterbrough pub that was turned over did not involve us. From what I understand it was Headhunters being squared up to by locals and then the police.
Referring to the CSC, in the world of football Casuals, I don't think they are particularly big players. Compared to the Hibs CCS or the Hearts CSF or the Huns/West Ham ICF, they are pretty much small beer. I used to run a bar on Rose ST Edinburgh which was frequented by many CSF guys and I knew a few CCS guys from other pubs working in Edinburgh. They didn't even mention the CSC as opponents but would quite willingly take on eachother or the Huns and go for trips down South.
Shepherd's Bush Green - "We're all off to London to the Green, to the Green!" Class! "See this Bucky, tastes just like the stuff we get at hame - Amazing eh?!" Best line of the Day
Apparently when the Celtic fans had had more than a few, the Headhunters and their mates (ICF - I suppose) turned up looking for trouble. Apparently an old bhoy was hit with a bottle at O'Neils on the Green and a few other bars where the bhoys were in (Would you believe called 'The Queen Adelaide & The British Monarch') were also closed as a precaution.
We went past O'Neils on our way back to the Tube from the bar we were drinking and the place was mobbed, fans had spilled onto the road and some little lad was playing the pipes on a traffic island. Our taxi driver was laughing his head off as they tried to drape scarves and some fans were kissing the lasses who had come with my bro to the match.
Later I met a bunch of Betis fans as I came to the Shepherds Bush tube station. As my bro and I were wearing the Hoops they insisted that we shared a drink with them from their bottle and they started chanting "Celtic Celtic Betis Betis".
Great day!
Hope other wise you enjoyed Belfast, bar the obvious Cultural event. Did you get a chance to go to Benedicts bar/Hotel? I know it's near Sandy Row but Marie and I stayed there when we went for our Honeymoon weekend and it was brilliant
Hailhail
baldy
Just looked at that CSC video on U Tube. The guy with the mohican I've chatted to and seen at various games over the while, especially down here. On Sunday he was walking ahead of me with other of his punk mates to the game.
That is not the CSC in any numbers - he's no hooligan. That was probably just the lads leaving one pub and being marched to the tube on their way to the ground. The same happened to us on the same day, leaving the Cock to Euston Tube and then on the Underground. That video has been edited to say something it wasn't.
The short guy on the tube - that'll be him who was playing the tough boy with the Boro lads and the female stewards on friday night. He is nothing more than a typical midget with 'small man/cock syndrome'. He wasn't willing to play with any of the big stewards and when the police had him - it was all "yessir, nossir"
Believe me as I have unfortunately seen the CCS in action with the CSF in Edinburgh in the middle of my bar, what was going on there was pretty easily contained by the Met. No one was really hurt, if there had been a big rammy there would have been a lot more than that. That video is virtually all posturing, as were the Headhunters as we left Stamford bridge when they were shouting at us from 100 yards away by the Tube Station from behind Police lines.
There was more reported trouble on Sunday and I did witness the steward assaulting our moron who ran on the pitch, the bottles thrown at the bus by Celtic fans at the Queen Adelaide.
Have absolutely no time for John O'Kane and his few mates - hope one day they go visit the Falls or somewhere like that and find out what happens to wee scroats who enjoy abusing people smaller or fewer in number than themselves. Know what fun I would have with him, his knees and a hurley.
baldy
Looks like GS agrees wie you baldy..another look at Al to sse if he will improve options. Unsure whether it is a guid sign or not for him
Skippy I’m beginning to like the sound of this aussie tim….wil he do enough to forgive for black Sunday thou?
The goals? Here’s a link http://www.motiono.com/watch/CroSoooN
Impressed by broon’s and jvoh 1st.
Giud too hear jfk should be battering doon the 1st team door.
The csc…well even mr o’kane in his book admitted they are a ramshackle mob and apart from a view so called victories as described in the book they have never bothered the main firms up here.
Thing is some do turn up at every away game esp in Europe and england hang around wie the scarfers due to the lack of numbers or bottle to make themselves known. Think they are most active at the republican marches rather than fitbaw.
Thing is there are enough rages in the hoops support that if anything did go off then we could have a massive ramie. This so called casuals might just one day light the fuse…
Was wondering about the punk in the video..punk and stone island just didnae compute.
We need mair of a traveling jungle bhoys and green brigade..lets push the hoops support europewards rather than 1980’s England wards.
Belfast….never went to the bar mentioned but was in the jury’s inn just next to sandy row- have a photo of the mural, mrs g who is a bebo addict has posted it on there- spent ma time in robinsons pub across from the hotel.
Took a trip doon the shankhill and the falls and you are correct would like to see so called hard men walk doon there…..but stormount is an impressive building….
Watched Liverpool tonight was impressed by vorin…think we missed a guid one there..if we were ever interested….
baldy - i went to that benedicts when i was were it was good, absolutly mobbed tho so wasn't in it too long.
the tour of the various area's is good.
i think skippy will be good he has wot we have been looking for a natural instinct to score goals.
rubbish neither of the america games are on setanta either.
