Russian roulette, not the game we wanted

E-mails have been flying back and forth all morning between maself and a few lurkers, who lurk dangerously on this site. All stated that, in the run up today’s draw it really feels like the season was beginning. It felt like the beginning of something happening, to steal the words of Ian Brown.

At quarter to eleven, I got goose bumps, thinking aboot the season ahead, thinking aboot Naka against Man U and oor performance in Milan, the fears I had withered away and I was awash wie hope.

At eleven seventeen, the adage fitbaw fans saying, that bloke from the beeb and Homer Simpson, that it’s the hope that kills you was never so true. When ma phone went and two words “Spartak Moscow” came from the receiver, the hope was replaced wie the feeling you get when a free kick hits you in the family jewels.

There was a few dodgy teams we could have got but don’t think that there is any doubt Spartak, well into their season, top of their domestic league and back by a Russian Oil baron who is not afraid to chuck roubles at them, were the worst team we could have got.

In the aftermath of the draw, the thinking that the UEFA cup will do oor co-efficient guid and produce a feel guid factor, as we would surely have a decent run, was topper most on ma mind.

Spartak will fancy their chances and make no mistake they would have fancied drawing us. Their fitness, sharpness, roubles and their artificial pitch all stake things in their favour.

Add to that, our record, Milan aside, of losing on average three goals every away game in Europe and oor defence fear of pacy centre forwards and teams playing on the counter, then the Russians will be kosacking and drinking vodka that makes you go blind for fun tonight.

The last team we played from the Eastern block was Shakter. Over two legs they well beat us and I don’t expect Spartak to be any worse than them. Mair worryingly the team they faced that night was better than the one we have now.

But....being a hoop there is always hope. Hope that only a fan can have. There must be a reason they haven’t been seeded. Their European record must be dodgy for them to be non-seeded. Like all Russian teams they might not travel well and if we survive the 1st leg CP will be bouncing for the 2nd.

I remember the fantastic night in the Amsterdam Arena, well i say remember that cake made me go funny, when the hoops produced a vintage display to qualify for the CL for the 1st time. Again that team was better than this one but that gives me hope.

The seeding system is set up so the bigger boys get teams they should beat. So if we canny beat Spartak, when stats say we should we dinny deserve to be in the Champions League.

This round always brings a few surprises. This year we have been lined up for the chop.

Forza.

I really hope we are not for the chop.

This is going to be a tough one.

This is also why I go mad when i see us not performing as well as we can/should against the opposition we had lined up in our pre-season friendlies.

OK we played better against Parma and there appeared to be a lot more shape with Donatti holding the deeper role than the midfield did against Newcastle, but we didn't exactly look ready for this tie.

Really hope we play at full tilt against both Killie and Falkirk before the away leg. I don't want to see us caught cold as we have in the past. Seriously, I can't see us getting a tie back if we concede more than 2 in the first leg. Also a real shame IMO that Skippy, who has looked the sharpest of all our strikers in pre-season, will not have much football before the first leg as he is suspended for Killie and Falkirk.

Naka is back today isn't he? We can't afford to be missing him, however will he be ready for this match as he may not have had any time to settle in with what will be a totally new midfield for that match.

So many ifs and buts but will feel a lot happier if we stick 3 past that smug pair of JJ and Brown on Sunday.

Just been sent this:

Forget the draw this is terrible news!!!!!!!!!

"Awwy Begg is leaving ra daiwy huddle on Cewtic Tewevision.

i woved the big fewwa."

he's away to singapore to work for ESPN or some other mob.

My brother is gutted 8>)

first things first..whit the beggster is leaving the hoops? oh the pain...tony hamilton will be polishing his heid now...

now...agree...or shabbyness in pre-season..esp against newcastle and the all stars, two teams who were decentish but i expect spartak to be better and that..disnny bode well for this tie.

all in parma were 3 weeks away from the start of their season and nearly got relegated not a guid yardstick performance

we can't lose 3 goals again away from home, which is why..if we go for a 4-5-1...all midfielders that are going to get used in the away leg need game time...and donatti needs to sit

if we are also going to bring in two defenders(as rumoured)...then...worryingly...they will only have one game to bed in...

something i never thought i would say...i hope kenny miller looks sharp on sunday....

sticking three past the marnocks would be the ticket...esp if tfod's drop points tomorrow lunch...

Hopefully the Bhoys will make a good start to the season on Sunday. I`m not so bothered with any other teams. In a bygone age I would have gone to the St Mirren game but going to the pictures was dearer than football in those days!Tough draw but not impossible.
Have a good weekend!

I would say all things considered (them halfway into season, used to playing on plastic, us still to ge our act together and only half baked in some areas), our chances of making the CL proper are about 40%.

Lady luck gave us a bodyswerve today, lads.

We have drawn the dark horses - the final will be played in Moscow for goodness sake - what a motivation for them !

Ach well, a hefty score V Killie to lighten the ambiance.
Oh, and a couple of dropped points for Caley as well :o)

Kevin
there's nothing wrong with polishing your head!!

Still think we can do it (rephrase that - I know we can do it), just that we have made it a lot harder for ourselves than perhaps necessary.

Enjoy the weekend lads

PLG.
Remember him?

Will be going to see his team tomorrow at Parc de Princes (in Celtic jersey plus my PSG/Celtic scarf pickked up a fair while ago).

I will be cheering him and his team all the way (against Sochaux). Saw them on TV in the Emirates cup and they looked as doped as tour de Frace cyclists - playing out their skins!

We'll see what they can do once somebody turns the music off and tells them to listen to tactics...

Anyway, my way of thanking AgentVat69 - shurely one of ush?

Sixtae,
enjoy your day out, nothing else to do in that town?
I`ll be going on the weekly grub grab, a regular Saturday thing. When is the next Saturday 3pm league game?
Thanks Kevin, I think I would need a set top box with a card slot but I`m not buying because they`ve taken away my Saturday afternoon. Boohoo!
No more signings? I think we`ve done in the SPL, although Berra at Hearts is a fine defender with real pace. I expect teams like Liverpool are watching him. Hey, great rumour! Where do I start it?
Y`all have a fine day, it`s a bel giorno here in cyberlandia.

About Mendy, my boy - whose heart is torn between PSG and the Tic - hopes that PSG get rid of him for a tidy sum BUT not to Celtic!!!

"Good sometimes, but most times rank" was the comment from the 21 year old fitba connaisseur.

I won't add anything to that but my beady eye will be on him ra night!

ianinjesi said...

That is the luck of a scout, picking a player who is basically poor after a few rare good performances.
When did John Barnes see Bobby Petta?
Falkirk top of the SPL until tomorrow at least.

ianinjesi said...

Oh aye, I just had a look at my World Soccer. It`s only Spartak Moscow, not CSKA! :-) I feel better now. (It`s the hope that kills ya) Enjoy the PSG game, Sixtae!

oh...just got a text aboot zambrotta...whits that all aboot?

Okay maybe someone other than Bobby Petta. :-)
Disappointing start to the league campaign. No real creativity, especially late in the game where the usual passing approach was abandoned.
On to Falkirk except for the first teamers who are going to Ireland this week.
Let`s hope we can see some Celtic goals next week.

Disappointing - can't help thinking that wee skippy would have tucked away the chances that were falling to big lumberbering guys (aye, JVoH you too) in the box today.

Strange tactical substitutions by GS today - must have had his reasons, but there you go.

A set back on day one but we've seen worse - remember 4-4 and all the guns were out for us?

A set back too, cos the huns are scoring for ... just now or so it seems (nearly said hun and fun in the same sentence - must be the beaujolais).

If it can be any consolation, here back in France, Lyon who are going for their 7 in a row (and it's a foregone conclusion) only managed a 0-0 at home on the first day yesterday.

Also went to see PLG's team yesterday, they hit the woodwork 3 times but could have lost about 5. Another 0-0, but entertaining and noise and atmosphere (remember that?).
Mendy wasn't even on the bench - nobody I asked knew if he was injured, suspended or just plain rank at the minute. Nobody semed to give a monkeys to be honest. Not a signing for us I hope.

All in all, I'm trying to keep a brave face on things but somewhere I've got this gut feeling that something ain't right.
Falkirk never mind Moscow seems like a big ask.
Long season ahead methinks.
:o(
