Will Riordan Get A Second Chance This Week

It's a question that has been debated up and doon the land, like the Mid Lothian question, except involving a wee guy from Lothian and not an outdated 300 year old agreement. Now could the reason for oor Deeks absence from the opening weekend is explained..

Or is it?

Could oor manager have just been looking oot for the young gifted talents mindset by giving him time off as the threat of a wee spell in the "big hoose" hung over- bad choice of words maybe?- him like a driving ban over Lee Hughes.

Now since that threat to join the gallant band of Ferguson, Adams, Pennet and the aforementioned Hughes has been lifted from his skinny frame will we see his skinny frame at Falkirk on Saturday manfully struggling against the elements that the wide open spaces of Westfield are a magnet to?

Or is there a Mid Lothian question? One which involves Mid Lothian pubs and clubs, which oor Deek is allegedly adept to frequenting much to oor teetotal managers dispair?
I know nothing of this except the rumours i have read on the net but if true and oor managers reported reaction to them, then i wonder if oor manager has booted Gary Caldwell in the baws for extra curricular activities and a hungover appearance on Soccer AM?

So has Deek burned his bridges due to the above or is there something else? Like maybe the hoops fans just bought into the meeja lauding of Deek as the next big thing that they fed us for two seasons.

A failed bid from R*ngers, who have since come up wie a hundred thousand reason why they didnae sign him, then us buying him for a so called steal we maybe thought that we had bought the finished article when really we might have just purchased a player of limited ability that if he had came through oor youth set up might have been classed the same as a Mark Burchill or Jamie Smith.
There is a folly and risk by signing players that impress in the SPL. Players can shine for lesser clubs but when the step up is made then their big player in a small club ability shines through and they are unable to handle the next step physically or mentally.

Some will be the exception of that rule, most will fall into it, but maybe it's time for the manager to give Deek his chance to see what camp he falls into.

He certainly merits a start for a few weeks in the team IMO.

He seems to strike a ball better than many of our other strikers and I would rather keep Deeks and see Majic and certain others disappear.

Iain/Kevin - did you watch the TFOD last night. I've read the comments on CQN about how bad they are. What are your opinions on them?

Even if they are not very good, they have now won 4 in a row without conceding, including two away games. They must be doing something OK and I have a nagging dount that too many of the collective are dismissing them as cloggers too quickly.

It's not as if they have any one like a Ferguson (Iain), Brown, Butcher or Hurlock littering their team at present either.

Riordan did get a vital goal against Motherwell but had an equally vital miss at Kilmarnock. He`s still a possible because the guys with the jerseys are not doing it!
I think that the players signed from SPL teams are shocked to discover that other teams lift their game so much when they play against the Bhoys.
As for Rangers, I haven`t seen them but as you say they have scored 8 in their last 4 games and haven`t conceded a goal. I think that the Celts can`t and won`t write any team off.

Baldy- i can only go on the ICT game as i haven't watched them europe.

against ICT they weren't impressive but...done something they huvnae done for years..they didnae look like getting beat.

They play long baws to mcculloch who banjo's the opposing full backs in the air- we should be worried aboot that- and ensure ferguson or an other is close enough to pick up the second baw.

All 3 goals against Cally came from 3 route one baws from their goalie and the two last week against zeta came fromt baws pumped into the box from set plays.

At the back, they huvnae been tested enough to say they are rank rotten but they defend simply wie thomson and headami playing as holding mids covering any venture up field from papac and hutton.

Once a team runs at them at pace and gets in behind them then i feel we can't judge but up until now you have to say if oor results had gone the same way as theres over the last six months then i would be happy.

The way they play will cause us problems..that i'm sure but i really huvnae seen enough quality in them for me to go if they need to change their system they can.

Too many players solid and rugged but thats what they need to close the gap and mop up the scottish league.

Ian great point regarding teams stepping up against us.

Thats the thing lhads, for the past few seasons they have dropped points left, right and centre. They wont anymore, wally has them big and strong and orginised.

A big season ahead. 1st place bags a champs league entry, have we enough quality? and is it being utilised properly.

How much do Celtic have to pay for a player who will dominate against SPL players? If it`s too expensive to do it with skill then pay for pace and toughness. McCulloch is up for every game although my man in Milan called him `a wrestler` when he has played for Scotland. Incidently Severin at Aberdeen is that type of player but our boss doesn`t only see beating Rangers as his objective, he wants skill to win the day.Meantime we can try to fill cyberland with mer mince! :-)It`s our thing!

A big problem for GS is to have a squad of players capable of getting the results both in Scotland and in Europe.
So a McCulloch is fine for the SPL, but step up a level and in the eyes of the connaisseur he is exposed for what he is "a wrestler".
On the other hand, big Jan is a proven CL campaigner.

The conundrum for the moment is that why are our CL campaigners not doing the biz in the league.

One answer could be that you're allowed to wrestle in the SPL (especially if you're wearing a blue jersey) but not in Europe.
As an example, see red shown to a certain Mr Hutton in his outing this season in Europe.
So what I'm thinking is that wee Gordon has got us geared up too much for a European style of football and not enough for the rigeurs of the SPL.

For too often last season we were bullied - maybe we won the Fairplay cup or something - but I would like to see teams afraid of us again (remember Sutton, Thompson, Big Majalby and yes, Bobo as well).
Sometimes I think we've got too many "nice" guys in our team, and when things aren't going our way they don't have the fight to get stuck in.

Getting back to the thread, yes get Deeks on the park, but he also needs a run of 4 or 5 games. Despite his physique, he strikes me as being "streetwise" - he knows what the SPL is about.

Don't know if any of that makes sense but I get the impression that if we don't have a change of attitude it could be a long, boring season.
I don't want to win the Fairplay cup and nothin else.

boh67- agree, mair impressed wie their robustness but...gow, broadfoot, weir, novo and mcculloch...even they will get found oot eventually.

have we enough quality...hell yeah...but question is do we the man to get the best out of them?

Ian- hartley, caldwell, pearson, elvis, riordan etc i seem to remember them dominating spl teams wie some skill and brawn.

was thinking aboot this the other day...has any gs team been full off big lumps? i seem to remember him signing skillful latvians and morrocains plus a wee irish nippy striker...

six- on sunday i'm sure the westler would have won at least one baw against simon ford who is hardly nesta. big jvoh needs to get his finger oot and prove his quality.

we have the squad..we need the mixture and the system...we got it right in the 1st season after a bad start..think we were 5 points behind after the 1st derby...and it was a decent run from sept onwards that won us the league

we require us to find form as august is a massive month...one that the manager needs to sort oot this week

us being bullied up front yes t the back no- did you see jfk's tackle on the killie bloke?- midfield undecided. but there will be games we will need to dig in, something we did last year.

sixtae- couldn't agree more we are getting bullied far too much by inferior teams and have no plan b when it happens.

riordan deserves a chance, nothing more nothing less.

he must at least be on the bench at a time when we are desperate for goals.

can't wait for mcdonald to become available.

seven- agree what is oor plan b but i remember mon having the same problem...
