Lotw Diary- Anthony Stokes

I had to laugh this week when i was sent an E-Mail concerning an article that appeared in The Guardian last week, which was an interview wie Anthony Stokes- that failed Celtic signing. Now, this passage- concerning the time he missed the Sunderland team bus- i thought summed up the modern day fitbawer...

"So Liam was telling me to look out for a KFC and 'get a bloody move on' and then - shit - I see it in my mirror. I couldn't get my satnav working properly and I'd taken the wrong turn-off ..."

No matter the money, looks- in the person who wrote the article eyes- and ability, the everyday things like timekeeping, satnavs and finding KFC's on motorways seem beyond them. Hell, a bet you some hire people to wipe their arses.

But it was his take on his proposed move to The Hoops that caught my eye....

"I went to Celtic, and also Charlton, and at both clubs they wanted me to sign there and then. They put a lot of unfair pressure on me. Celtic, in particular, knew I wanted to play for them but it wasn't fair the way they suddenly produced a contract, put it in front of me and expected me to make up my mind straight away."

Nothing up wie that, i mean as the article says Keane was his fav player and Man Who were his "team" and Celtic probably knew that he would jump at the chance to do a "Liam" and join the "Black Cats"

But then i googled Mr Stokes name and came up wie this article from the Independent on Sunday and a quote from his agent, who also doubles as his da'.....

"He loves Celtic and was prepared to accept less money to play for them. When he gets up in the morning he listens to Celtic songs and by the time he goes to bed at night he's watched Celtic videos." Yet there was only so much less money he was willing to accept. It is understood Celtic offered a deal worth " only" £8,000 a week. So Celtic lost out, as did Charlton, whom Stokes had decided to join (on £14,000 a week) before Keane, his hero, made a last-minute intervention."

So, i can assume from that, that the "unfair pressure" Celtic put him under was offering him less money, but a fair wage for a untried 18 year old who had just had one purple patch in his career and would have been playing for trophies and in Europe every season?

So, i can also assume that he has got his satnav working well enough to find his way to the Sunderland bench every week, while a bloke called Kenwyn plods around the park in place of him?

Stokes - I am not to sure that he can do a job for us. Is he better than Sheridan in the long run? Is he still with us for that matter? Time will tell, but if he carries on playing (Kenny) Milleresque at the Stadium of Light, well he's hardly going to be doing himself any favours.

Re - McShane (Last thread), considering that Keane bought Anderson, who many called to be signed for us (Shudder), as McShane's replacement when he had only just signed him from WBA - is quite scary as a thought.

Not sure if I 100% agree with that assessment. However the fact that Keano was trying to sign BoBo on the last day of August, reveals a lot that he wasn't happy with his CB buys.

Right, night spent surfing the 'Timterweb' must come to an end, for tomorrow is a school day and I suppose work too.

All our young players seem to get this pubic bone injury, perhaps young Sheridan too?
Remember the supporters club that left from the old Gorbals, James Stokes VC?
I suppose if you have SatNav you stop using any other means. A bit feckless though! :-)

I did some quick research, he really put himself into the battle and deserved that VC.
The supporters club is now based at the Brazen Head.

Stokes - I wanted us to sign him and was disappointed when he went elsewhere. Don't know if he is still on our radar, but I would give him second chance if it didn't work out down south. Not for funny money though.
Same goes for wee Shaun and Liam Miller (different situations, I know)- second chance BUT on our terms.

Disappointed about Scotland going out - the most "gaulling" thing for me is that the team we beat twice in the campaign leap "frog" us to go thru.

Had to laugh at Ecky-thumps aftermatch comment about having to get to grips with the "multi-ball system".
Fur God's sake, Alex, stop talking a loada balls and get the schoolboy defending sorted out first.

Any truth in the rumour that the ballboy who set up the first Italy goal was Domenech's nephew?

Naw, it's all pish: I just made it up.

JFK has (wisely) withdrawn from the Scotland B international at Airdrie tomorrow. All Rangers players who were picked are usually on their bench.

Amazing!
Chick Young has exclusively revealed that Alan Hutton is being watched by Arsenal, Chelsea and Man U. Another example of downsizing? :-)

Lads maybe ma post was a bit misleading but I don’t think Stokes is on oor register or radar after the aforementioned incident. Thing is we now have Skippy and, eh, Deek…..and what would we do without oor wee bush kangaroo?

Sixtaeseven- think we will see the Shaun returning situation soon enough. Unsure how to feel but I did get a funny feeling last night when I dreamt of Aiden being direct on one wing and Shaun on the other..there was also no Italian or Japanese in sight.

Also Naw, It’s all pish: I just made it up…fantastic esp wie the January windae coming up…I’m sure we can use that some how…..

Ian- Roberto Cafu Dider Mason Boyne Hutton…..bright lights big city will be impressed wie his “do you know who I am” bouncer patter…….i’m sure the nightclubs in Derby, Wigan and Birmingham are rubbing their hands at the thought…..

Baldy- ma knowledge of midlands fitba’ is well off. I didnae realise that McShane had just signed for Sunderland. So did WBA sell all their CB’s then?

McShane was at WBA last year, unsure whether it was a loan deal from Man Yoo or a straight signing. Think it was more the loan deal. My knowledge is mostly gleaned from the odd chat with colleagues and watching Midlands Today (BBC 1 Local news).

WBA did sell Davies to the Villa, but brought in Leon Barnett from Luton, Hoefkins from Stoke, Shelton Martis from Hibs, Tininho (Portuguese CB but like Martis hardly played), Cesar from Marseille and another Portuguese/Mazambique CB called Pele. Combined fee not a lot and they seem to be doing OK in the Championship.

They also have the old stalwarts Albrechtson and Robinson still playing.

One of the directors where I work, is a season ticket holder and a canal boat lover. He and his mates live in Brum, hire a boat in the Birmingham Basin to take them to every home game at The Hawthorns. The boat has a bar, they sell 40 tickets to pay for the hire and get drunk on the way to and from the game. They can even take the boat to take them to Molinieux.

Demand is such, they have been asked to run a second boat.

Must be some trip.
