View From The Wing- Celtic 1 St Mirren 1

St Mirrens flukey only shot on target goal and Riordon scores his farwell goal, maybe...

This was always going to be a slightly negative post. There was a few things bugging this blogger and conversations, at the game, in the pub and on the bus, then a 90 mins to forget, another 90 mins to add to the long list of 90 mins to forget, sort of summed up the confused nature of the beast that is the Celtic support.

It started of wie the question "Who do you think GS will buy in Jan?" and the answer "If the board had any sense they would not give him a penny, to ensure he b*ggers off back to Match of the day 2, in the summer". When asked why he thought this after 2 championships, 2 last 16's and 2 cups, the answer was "After Bratislava, then Motherwell he said he would sort the problems, he said he would be exciting score goals be entertaining, 3 years on we still have the same problems, he has proved he canny sort them"

"Look around, empty seats, apathy, the bubbles burst and nae one is interested"

After the 90 mins it was difficult to argue. The mood was as dark as the East End sky. Supporting yer team shouldnae be a chore. It shouldnae feel like a chore but..when you see yer season slipping back into the mediocre that has characterised the last 2 seasons , the same mistakes being made again and again, then the chore factor comes into it. When you hear blokes discussing not going to the forthcoming games as they canny be bothered then you know yer in trouble.

The lowest attendance for sometime, in the league, shows it's not working. We have the chance to go 4 in front, right, St Mirren are not a big draw, but under 40,000, and that's being generous, turn up. The board will be noticing this. No matter the season book sales, nae one buying pies, bovrils or overpriced sh*tty pizzas will have the PLC wondering why the consumers are not turning up to follow their chosen pied piper.

So why? Fact is over the last few weeks we have seen performances creep back to the end of last season level. Injuries, maybe have played the part but....there is failings massive failings that simple management should sort are proving to show short comings in oor manager.

It was summed up today by three decisions. One, naming virtually the same team as last week and midweek when the performances were sair to watch. Two, his subs. Bringing on Sno, who had a decent game, and shoving the struggling Broony oot wide, then bringing on Deek, great goal, to put oot wide right and moving Hartley to left back where he cost us the goal beggared belief.

Ok, he could say his subs worked. The fact that we were playing a team that was humped 5-1 last week, meant that they were never going to come oot and attack. The fact, that JiriJaro lasted to half time, then seven minutes of the second half to be replaced by a defensive midfielder instead of a more direct pacey player, again was bemusing. We only had one creative outlet the whole game, who got crowded oot. This was not sorted until it was too late.

Three, the fact that there is no plan b. Withoot any natural full backs, he expects two centre halves to be overlapping full backs. He expects, Jiri, to become a direct left hand sided midfielder. His ridgid 4-4-2 formation is right from the dark ages of the British coaching manual.

Now, while the players are not entirely blameless for today or last weeks showing, one thing they don't lack is effort. Yes, today, and last week they had effort, they are honest but lack quality. The manager has hung some of them oot to dry by conistantly playing them oot of position. Thing is, these players have kept the manager from getting it really tight due to the fact that they are honest professionals who have fight and spirit.

I will not abuse any player in the Hoops that gives me effort. Yes, some should not be wearing the Hoops as they are really not guid enough but the effort is there and if the manager is responsible for that then he deserves credit.

Off today's team, being honest here, which ones if they left in January would we really miss? Tell you this only McManus, Hartley, Brown- if the buzzbomb goalscoring midfielder returns, where has that player went and why is it any player we sign suddenly becomes a different player from what we signed? manager, tactics?- McGeady and McDonald- O'Dea and the goalie are left oot because he husnae really had a chance- would be spared in the cull.

So that leaves, Elvis, Caldwell, Jiri, Sno, Deek, Killen and Hesslelink could leave wieoot much wailing of the fact that they are gone. Add to them the benchwarmers Zurawaski and Balde. Young Caddis must also be wondering tonight if he has a future at CP if he canny get a game against St Mirren at home.

The meeja, tonight, on the way home took Celtic fans to task for saying the managers position is shaky. Ok, it's not shaky, we are not Real Madird who can sack managers after winning leagues, but...if this season develops the same way the performances of last did we won't win three in row. Falkirk will be looking forward to playing us and the h*ns, who have won the last three, two at a canter as we have rolled over and died, against us, will relish booting us of the park.

Tonight, is a night, when the doubts we had since the start of the season have resurfaced. The fact that we maybe doubted that oor manager could handle a challenge. We have dropped points before at home against smaller teams but this time it's different....it's closer, every point is a prisoner.

I'm still confident that we will come through. For all ma moanings, i trust the players. We are better than most of the SPL and when we do click then we can be interesting to watch. If oor manager gets it right in Jan then we should have nuthin to worry aboot. His record makes us doubt this. It could be hit or miss.

Guid thing is we have the chance to get back in the saddle and winning ways quickly on Tuesday.I'm looking forward to it...i don't see supporting ma team as a i chore...and for all ma doubts the manager and players will get ma backing.

Forza

From the last thread....

Ian- yes, we do have better players than fawkirk, hopefully the better quality we have shines through..mair quality to match the effort.

Six- i expected a stuffy game, i got a stuffy game but i got a game that i didnae expect so many to have off days.

As i said the manager could have prevented this or changed this earlier.

Sno came on and done more than Hartley and Broon put together..will say well done to the big man, credit where credit due...no saying much being the best today right enough....

I'll stick by ma guns, still don't think Deek is the complete package but...a wee run widnae go amiss...as we are struggling at the mo...

Yes, recent displays are beginning to look like the end of season fare that we have become accustomed to once the title is wrapped up. Problem is that, we are only 15 games into the league campaign.

We are definitely an enigma.
Yesterday we lost our FIRST league goal at home. But that goal meant we lost two points that normally we would have counted on.
We have had a bad run of injuries and a heavy schedule of games.
But surely we have a squad capable handling that against the likes of (no disrespect) St Mirren.

So what's the problem?

Personally, I think it's due to the fact that we are not freshening up the starting 11 enough.
The majority that started yesterday looked knackered against Hearts last weekend, and that was before playing in Milan.
There's a few who should have started on the bench yesterday: Skippy and Skoosh are obvious examples. Probably Caldwell should not have played. Caddis, our only available natural full back, should have.

Positives from yesterday?
When Sno came on strangely enough for a "holding" midfielder, we became more direct. He was the only guy I saw yesterday capable of making FORWARD passes, one of which led to the goal. Before that we just shuttled the ball from right to left and back again without actually passing forward!
Also Deeks gave us something extra with his movement and passing and, of courese, he demonstrated what he does best, and got us out of a hole.

With noises being made that the BIG SPEND isn't going to happen in January, we really must be looking at giving our squad players the nod more often. Continuity is one thing but some of the bhoys out there are dead on their feet even at this fairly early stage in the season.

PS
Sometimes a feel a bit of an imposter, sitting here at a keyboard - the real heroes are you guys that actually go out there week in week out, especially in baltic conditions like yesterday.

Well done you guys, if it wasn't for you we wouldn't be where we are: top of the league and among the elite in Europe !!!

PS
You should see my boy at the minute, his "other" team is PSG... Now that really is an enigma!!!

Oh, nearly forgot: "C'Mon Lyons!".
They lost yesterday, resting a few of their main men in a difficult away game at Caen. At least they handle their affairs in a dignified way, & take the consequences - no helping hand from the FFF, you understand.

Bonne journée, one & all!

Sixtaeseven- The team is an unpredictable enigma, one, that I could handle if we walked the walked more often, than looking like a team befit of ideas and creativity. Maybe we are missing Naka but……if GS wants pace and creativity on the wings then why was a oot and oot winger not played yesterday.

He fought to keep Jim O’Brien and a game yesterday, which was perfect for him, he was no where to be seen. It was only when Deek came on that St Mirren had another attacking worry from midfield.

Agree, the heavy schedule has taken it’s tool, no mistake, Skippy is the shadow of himself, Caldwell could take a rest from the abuse that reins down on him and Scott Broony should be locked in a room and made to watch vid’s of his Hibs performances.

Yesterdays two points dropped is down to the manager. It will only be redeemed by now beating them on January 2nd, that’s if we don’t drop any mair between now and then.

Positives? St Mirren scored wie their only shot on goal, Motherwell came to Cp played far better and got a beating, Sno looked ok, O’Dea didnae hide and Deek scored a great goal.

Negatives?- oor instance that playing the baw around the back then humping it is fitba the celtic way…..

Agree wie all of your post Sixtaeseven.

Wie regards of you being an imposter. A measure of a fan is not whether you go to the games or not but what you feel after them. We have seen some of your posts after defeats…..don’t feel like an imposter. Also you make an effort to watch the hoops some of the bar room mouths who praise GS willnae leave the pub walk 100 yards to another to watch the game on polestar, then you come back and they lecture you for slagging the manager….

Oh, PSG, oh dear….from new arsenal manager to candidate for the dunfermline joab, maybe he will replace Big Eck again…..

away to help a friend move hoose, i'm the driver as the van is hired in ma name....nae lifting for me...

Our lack of conviction was back to the Liam Brady days of passing across teams without any penetration. St Mirren made a lot of mistakes which I saw as a sign to play percentage football and get the forwards involved. Taking off the main striker with 5 minutes to go? Okay bring Killen on but leave JVoH on too for goodness sake. Reminded me of the substituting of Hartson against Clyde.
I`m glad that Sno and Riordan combined to produce that goal and I would like to see them starting on Tuesday.
When St Mirren score a man to my left stood up and exploded into a vein bursting devil act. The first league goal lost at home mate!
I back the manager but I have nagging doubts about his fondness for Hartley and Pressley, of course that`s my problem! :-) Who could have seen a place on the wing for Naka!

Ianinjesi- St.Mirren were there for the taking, they weren't attacking and your observation of the fact we took an attacker off is spot on.

JVOH, was not playing well but...if we had shoved Killen him and Skippy up front the already creaking buddies backline would have buckled.

GS likes the system and disnny seem to take risks...two upfront and attack from the wings, no creativity from the middle...i only remember him takings risks for spells like the Naka in the middle against Dundee Utd...

I've grown to like Hartley, Elvis...good pro but really shouldnae be there...

I back the manager as well, but like MON he seems to be stubborne as a mule....

Sixtae,
fair point, however we all realise that the best managers do things their way and if a fan can think out a move then the opposition can too!
Okay our boss doesn`t tolerate `Hail Mary football`. :-)
