Dr Jo? I Presume......
"What Do You Mean This Is Ma Team, Jock....."
As ma “weeningoffromuselessfitbamessageboards” continues after I proved that, I could or, mair like, proving that in a enforced absence I don’t need to find oot what Hector Smectum fae Naewhereville is spouting crap aboot…. I have found other uses for this thing called the Timternet….
Like watching fitba’ for he haw, legally of course. Well, I did watch West Ham v Birmingham on some dodgy Chinese channel- it left me very unfulfilled, crap game, poor tactics, poor players..like watching an overpaid SPL- but I found that some betting sites have live streaming of games, which must be legal…
My Fridays are now complete, running home early from work to watch FC St. Pauli play in the Bundesliga 2 then maybe catching some obscure Portuguese League game rounded off by watching a Serie B game….
No much bother there you may think- MrsG might say differently- these wee teams must get paid from these sites to stream games? I’m not stealing revenue from them, I’m contributing…so what aboot the big boys?
A wee Google search shows that you can basically see EVERY EPL game at 3pm on a Saturday. This week was the first week that r*ngers had pulled their hame game from the overseas streams. I asked maeself if Celtic would do the same?
Of course they are after the courts have got involved in banning pubs round aboot Celtic Park and Glesga toon center from showing the games on Polstat. Round the grounds I can understand- though why guys pay their bus / plane / train fare then sit in the boozer and don’t go in is beyond me- but stopping overseas Hoops seeing the game streamed onto their laptops in their living rooms is taking it bit far.
Right, I know the Hoops want you to subscribe to Channel 67, which isnae available to everyone and feedback proves it is shoddy, and I think everyone who WANTS to subscribe does. For me the stopping of this overseas screening- lot of the channels who screen the games are Asian or Japanese- will damage the Celtic “Brand”- fecking hate that word- in the long run.
I mean imaging a club stopping their games being screened in the countries where we have signed their biggest stars to sell shirts….
And imaging us depriving the world of seeing Aiden McGeady twinkle toe his way to superstardom. Banning these screenings will only make his defection to the EPL mair hyped on these streams…
That is the maist worrying thing aboot Aiden. His “Zidane” turn and play this year- and also the press bigging him up is a worrying turn- means that the stories of those EPL vultures coming in wie “Huttonesq” money are just round the corner…
But that’s a worry for another day. For now, as the Hoops are finding form, for me, the comparisons wie dark days in oor recent past are all too relevant.
Firstly I mentioned the impact Georgios Of The Jungleios has had on the support. I compared it to Craig Bellamy’s arrival. We were struggling before the January windae, also, that season, Bellars arrival gave us a much needed boost but….as we all know it was only a temporary boost, the teams failings still shone through before the season was oot.
Then the fitba’ that we are playing and the make up of the team are reminding me of Dr Jo’s class of 1998/99. A team that plunged the lows, scaled the heights but failed when the chips were doon.
At the back, we were similar. Right, Johnnie Gould or Stewart Kerr widnae lace the Holy Goalies boots or should that be Velcro his gloves. Mick and Caldwell are as fallible as Stubbs and Reiper. Full backs, Lee Naylor ,Stephane Mahe and Tosh could have been separated at birth- all were / are prone to erratic displays- and Hinkel, Boyd and Jackie are/were international, ahem, class…
Midfield, if Aiden continues he will reach the heights reached by Rigi Blinker, if Paul Lambert could grow a world class beard then Paul Hartley would be looking in the mirror, Scott Broon is Craig Burley wieoot the goals- and the terrible hair- and Simon Donnelly was the original Nakamura.
The cover for the midfield as well, The David Hannah tapes is surely used in all Dutch Academies…..
Up front, Viduka and Henke. One a lazy sod wie talent and the other a pest, a goalscorer and a worker. Jvoh and Skippy anyone? Also add in Burchill- Derek Riordon- Brattbakk- Chris Killen- and the original longhaired lover from, eh, Leith Darren Jackson was the original Georgios….
Dr Jo’s sides are ridiculed looking back. Failing to beat Kilmarnock three times, losing to St Johnstone twice, drawing wie Dundee, losing 4 goals to Fc Zurich and failing to score at home against St Pats quite rightly makes praise of this period seem hard. But….
From mid December to the game we lost the league, we went 19 games unbeaten in all competitions. During that spell we scored 57 goals. This included five goal maulings of Dunfermline, St Johnstone, Aberdeen- a 5-1 victory at The Rhodders- and Dundee. We scored 4 against Hearts and Dunfermline, three against Dundee and Morton plus got a 2-2 draw at ipox.
In this spell we beat Motherwell 7-1 at Fir Park. A game that Sundays game reminded me off. Everything went right that night. Makes me remember how guid those 6.05pm kick offs were…
All in that season we scored 5 goals or more on 8 occasions, one occasion was a wee player called Lubo’s debut. In that spell we played some cracking stuff.
It all came crashing doon- like a galot from the North Stand- when der hun won 3-0 at CP. A lifeless cup final defeat followed and the ridicule has been written in history.

A run like that usually wins you leagues. Usually breeds confidence but deep doon that Hoops team knew they were missing something. A 5-1 victory then a 2-2 draw against yer rivals should give you the boost you need to overcome them but the pressure was all too much.
How will GS team 3 handle a three game decider against der hun? We are 3-0 down and huvnae laid a glove on them. We don’t look on or off the park to have the measure of them.
Dr Jo’s Celtic took results from them. We are sitting here wanting oor team now to go on a kind of free-scoring, entertaining winning streak that his team produced but when the gongs are handed oot we have had the backbone to see it through.
Then we can lay the ghost of Jo and the curse of the big loan signing to rest.

I was there! Where? Fir Park for the 7-1 match! Supporters bus from George Square, Lisbon Lions club?
Was there that day maeself Ian, got chased from 30 Motherwell Casuals round the back of the Civic centre...lost a hat and ma cairry oot.....
Watch the performance on Celtic Tv a few weeks back it was that, that got me thinking aboot Dr Jo, his brand of fitba and his team....
I didnae miss a game during that run and we played some cracking cracking stuff....
End of the season was terrible, remember the of signing of Scott Marshall.....
Before the legal beagles have a go right i know watching games on Asian Tv is illegal...but do you really think West Ham, Spurs, Liverpool care that i can watch their games in my living room?, they are well compensated...
Try as I might, I find it hard to draw parallels between the current team and Dr Jo's team of 10 years ago.
I must admit tho' that I didn't see much of the Tic during that period and I would usually follow the games either on the radio (if I was lucky) and in wee snippets in the Equipe or France Football (or week-old Sunday Mails my dear old mum used to send me).
I prefer to think about that time as part of a chain of events that would see some great footballers come and go, some high and lows, and eventually lead us into the MON period where, if we are honest, we haven't looked back since.
Dr Jo's team didn't get us into the Champions League or very far in the UEFA either.
We now have a team who can give anybody in Europe a run for their money over a home and away basis.
------
Seems the Pana supporters are stocking up on Tic gear for the game tonight. Must be the Sammy effect!
Just hope they know what they're doing, cos the huns can be unforgiving especially when they get humped
:o)

I have read bits and pieces on CQN about stats on the yellow cards dished out this season (Aiden, etc). Nothing surprising really, but I quite like how one guy calls FergusHun (still to pick up a yellow in the SPL):
"Saint Bazza the Uncarded"
Ach, well - ah liked it...
Can anyone provide info on the number of fouls committed by each player?
When you were talking about Dr Jo and the footy played then I was feeling nostalgic for those days. It was probably more to do with the regular Saturday matches and the better social occasions that I and friends had then. ;-/
i can see wot u are saying kev regarding some things but agree with sixtae this team and the general well being of celtic is far better than at the time of dr jo's team.
also the huns were a lot stronger back then as well compared to now and were miles ahead by turn of the year.
i was watching a game on celtic tv the other nite and there was a match from that season on and they mentioned a stat which i found incredible but thinking back it was true.
up to that motherwell game which was round about this point in that season (21-feb-99) we had only won 2 away games the whole season which compared to this season would be less than any team but gretna in the league.
i agree tho with some of your player likenesses and how we have fallen into the trap of rolling over v the huns.
Hopefully tho we have adressed this in the january window by strengthing the squad while they have got weaker without a doubt and i for one can't wait til we get them at parkhead.
where i disagree tho is dr jo's team never achieved anything in the year he was there when all is said and done and strachan's team has.
there are a lot of things tho that can sway these things like the huns being weaker, luck, strachan having more time/stability etc but as sixtae said this team have done us proud in europe as well over last couple of seasons and think it is unfair on them to say they have let us down when the going got tough.
good article tho, i like thinking back to old teams and comparing them etc.
i was at that motherwell game as well that nite it was magic.
lubo scored a cracker of a free-kick as well as henke's 4.
u forgot one of dr jo's better signing's big mjallby but that might have been because he never really made the impact he should have until o'neill came in and played him at centre-half week in week out.
can't believe that reg ferguson hasn't been booked in spl this season.
combative midfielder with tendancy to mouth off at ref and fondness of running off park after scoring a goal still to be booked more than half way thru the season, something dodgy there me thinks.
seen a few greeks today with celtic gear on, going to watch on tv soon to see the reaction.
We can`t all have been in Motherwell that night! It was snowing man! :-)
BBC Rangers? As well as the match they have Attila the Hun at 10.45! What chance have we got?
Ian: number of fouls committed by each player?
Both Aiden and St Bazza the Uncarded have made less than 36 fouls each (they are not on the SPL stats page where the top 12 'bad lads' are listed: the guy at the bottom of the list has made 36 fouls).
An interesting fact I picked up is that an SPL booking is made on average every 8 fouls (7.95 actually).
So for arguments sake, let's say the "combative midfielder" and the "dazzlingly entertaining winger" have each committed 32 fouls (which would put them both not far behind the worst offenders, so it's a kind of 'worst case' especially for a winger, you would think).
You could say that we could be looking at about 4 yellows apiece.
The reality is that Celtic's best player is on 7, and the Huns equivalent is on -erm- well, that's why he's known as "the Uncarded".
Something's rotten...
C'mon the Greeks - i'm sure they'll take it philosophically if the ref's a "Homer"
:o)
Ok, the link wie Dr Jo’s team was tedious to say the least. And, yes, I completely agree that today’s side is better-overall, argument can get made for certain players being better than current, and has achieved far mair than Dr Jo’s.
I was just trying to make the link as Sunday got me thinking aboot another 5-1 victory at the rhodders- as seven said was on Tic Tv- and that 7-1 game against The Well. It was the type of fitba’ I wanted to see but I still get the same feeling I had back then….even though I KNOW THIS TEAM IS BETTER…..
Maybe I was just trying to bring maeself back doon to earth, reminding maself of the 3-0 doon not having laid a glove on them..but I enjoyed the wee look back and that run was enjoyable and I reckon we saw the birth of two legends that season in Lubo and Henke.
Hopefully we will see the birth of two legends this season in Aiden and Skippy….
I never forgot Johan…just he wisnny in the photo!!!!!!
Ian…those days could be renamed “Lotw….The Buckfast Years….”
I’m sure someone on CQN had a site that listed fouls commited- Aiden wisnae in the top ten- but that stat is unbelievable..nae bookings for the golden child? I wonder if he has been booked in Europe….Saint Bazza o’ Bothwell the uncarded and unclothed indeed…..
Mon the Trifilli*
Oh, I have just watched the first half of Everton V Brann…how did Phil Neville ever become a fitbawer is beyond me….

I hear the RST are trying to get that banned as "Hun" is offensive...
They want it replaced wie "The Dambusters"....

viduka's not in the photo either or lubo but u mentioned them so wot's your point haha.
vidar riseth was another regular in dr jo's team that's not in the photo.
remember his sending off in the 3-0defeat to the huns, his tackle was one of the highlights of the game and his clearance/cross across his own goal right onto the forwards nut which led to a st.johnstone goal in a defeat up at mcdiarmid park that season.
he did score the opener in the league cup final tho v aberdeen in the barnes/dalglish year.
here's a question for anyone, can u remember who viduka's debut was against?
it was meant to be hearts but then he disapeared.
reg the league wins under strachan, yes i believe we were helped by the opposition being poor but we were still undoubtedley the best team unlike when they won it when we got to seville or o'neill's last year when a combination of andy davies/hugh dallas and us taking our eye off the ball allowed them to steal it.
they were terrible tonite, predictable long ball yet again, really poor.
nothing to fear.
hail hail.
0-0 isn`t such a bad result for a home leg. :-( Unfortunately the them have a history of being rubbish and still getting the result. That`s why they ARE the force of darkness!
UEFA.COM are inviting applications for the UEFA cup final, it`s in Manchester. If I couldn`t be bothered going to Hampden last year I can`t see myself going there. Any good teams left in?

Vidar, the bould Vidar....I remember that cross come clearance at St Johnstone, dear o dear...but his tackle in the Huns game? Nah, i must have blanked that from ma mind.
He is one of the few foreigners to score in a domestic cup final you know. What a terrible cup final that was.....
As i said the comparison between Jo and GS teams was tedious and I used the “Bloggers Code”, which means i can write any auld pish. But really.....when was the last time a Celtic site/blog mentioned David Hannah?
LOTW: It’s an Alternative Hardcore Blog......you know
It’s as alternative as Mark Viduka scoring his first Celtic goal as Marko in the luxurious surroundings of Cappilow- scored wie a volley - in a 3-0 Scottish Cup victory for the Hoops.
It was on a Monday night...and i was drunk.....
Seven, the proof is oor results in Europe. They determine the quality of THE CHAMPIONS. No matter who or what is said 6 hame games unbeaten at CP in the group stages say’s it all.
And remember the first season we won the league against a team in the last 16 of the CL...
But i still think the quality of fitba’ has been poor...lol
Canny wait for tomorrow nights instalment of the Bundesliga 2. St Pauli play TUS Koblenz in a 11th play 12th mid table clash.....
Will Tayki remind me of “Big Tebs” again and Bruns John Collins? Will Sako run around looking like a French Chris Killen?

O-0 is a good result in the knock stages of any comp..but i think the Huns will score across there, unsure if Pana have the guns to score two...
Heres hoping....
Anyway, i see the bigger teams all had decent results last night..few decent German teams, Spanish and Aberdeen...
Wonder if MrsG fancies a wee trip to Manchester...does it clash wie Moscow though?
The huns will get humped in Athens: the ref won't be so lenient in the Greek arena and Manucho will do the bizz.
You can only hope that performances like last night's will make them realize that they are in fact Dross (wi a capital D) and it will maybe start to take effect in league matches as well.
What's the deal with Boydochenko? does Wattie no trust him in the "big" matches or was he out on the bevvy wi' Burley?
:o)
vidar was one of they cult hero type of players u mentioned before.
the tackle i meant was when he halfed either wallace or reyna and got sent off near the end, it was a belter.
viduka's debut was at parkhead v dundee utd, he came on as sub with about 15 mins left we were 1-0 down and won 2-1.
the morton game was his 1st start and his 1st goal was a brilliant wee drag back turn then he blasted it in. his 2nd went in off his bum after larsson had a shot.
u are right reg that cup final it was brutal but obviously good we won.
i agree with u totally mate at times the football has been really poor but here's hoping we have now turned the corner.
Well done Aberdeen - takes a lot of character to come back from a hammering like Sunday's and put on a decent display.
In addition, it puts the Huns performance into an even dimmer light.
Roll on Saturday - keep the pressure on!

How bad was McCooluck? How man times did he lead wie his elbows?
From El Mundo Deportivo..before the Huns played Barca do you think Charlie Adam got compared to Messi????
McGeady, an ‘M’ with Maradona and Messi
Aiden McGeady is a blonde version of the imperial Diego and Leo, but - for now - without the media exposure of the Barcelona and ex-Barcelona cracks that he admires.
Scots attacker himself, who nevertheless defended the colours of Ireland, explains, "I was just three months old when Maradona won the World Cup-86, but he always fascinated me. I studied him and I spent hours on the tapes that I had collected. I went out and practised with a golf ball and a tennis ball, and it is fantastic, because then you control the ball better. " He says quietly with no sign of bigheadedness that he has been able to have 500 touches with the tennis ball followed by 200 with golf, alternating also both feet.
McGeady loves the way that Maradona had to get past his opponents, as now does Messi. The way he likes to play, his technique is much more than just trickery. Slipping in that apart from him only Ronaldinho is fully capable of do something well (indicating Aiden) his father John, (ex- Sheffield United), using a little wit and enjoyment, to paraphrase the man himself, Johan Cruyff.
McGeady has been compared with Cristiano Ronaldo (ManU) for his explosiveness and months after appearing on the scene with Celtic, in a match against Milan in Champions dating back to April 2004, a portion of the fans dubbed him 'Aidendinho' an allusion to '10 ', Barcelona.
From small matches combined with the team at his school, of course Catholic, with the club, "always playing on Saturday and Sunday, so I became hardened." And now, according to his coach Gordon Strachan, a professional of physical preparation, particularly strengthening his upper body.
At 15 he wanted to join the Celtic first team, but they said wait a little bit, and at 16 he said 'no' to Arsenal to avoid a 'one-on-one' with nostalgia for Glasgow. On the other hand, he went with Eire in the under-15 category, to debut with the full team in 2004. Being Irish his paternal grandfather 'defected' to his native Scotland, which made him stick to defend those colors in the lower teams.
Aiden has always had things very clear. If Messi, who because of his involvement in the Copa America enjoyed holidays, had participated in the Scottish stage last summer, he would have gone to see him live. And when he emphasized that with cuts and supersonic football is not enough to succeed, and perfected his touch style to put his incredible technique in the service of the team.
For example last Sunday, when McGeady made a 'roulette' in the opposition area with three defenders around him, and as if a string was attached to the ball crossed it to top scorer McDonald. A marvel of action, without nerve-Aiden not knowing how brilliant this was - and making it clear that Messi or 'El Kun' are not the only heirs of Diego Armando Maradona.
To be fair ah think they did talk about Charlie Adam as an 'M'...
...for Missing link.
I really hope Celtic go for it next Wednesday!!!
What a night it will be - and do all you Bhoys that are going realize how LUCKY you are ?!?
