It's The Hope That Kills You

The morning after the day before. I'm sure all Hoops heids are as murky as the day ootside my window. I know my heid is murky. It probably wont be cleared until the summer and we see for sure what direction oor club will go in. Mind you ma heid could clear if- to quote Frank MacAvennie- "Have the the greatest comeback since Elvis" and somehow end up winning the league.

As I say it's the hope that kills you. So how do the others see it?

"The hex continues. Celtic have now faced Rangers four times since Walter Smith returned to Ibrox for his second spell and on each occasion he has put the Indian sign on the Parkhead side. Nor has there been much variation in the script - aside from Rangers' comfortable 3-0 romp at Ibrox in October - as Smith's players have absorbed Celtic's huffing and puffing before blowing their rivals' house down." The Telegraph

"Despite controlling much of this latest renewal of the fixture, it seemed clear from some way before the finish that they were destined not to do enough to equalise Kevin Thomson's goal" The Guardian( but the Observer match report)

"WHERE NOW for Gordon Strachan? His side performed decently enough at Ibrox yesterday, but without the bite required to put Rangers' title aspirations under real pressure. The 1-0 defeat has left the club's supporters staring at a season without silverware." Sunday Herald

"The midfielder experienced the ecstasy and agony of the famous fixture when he bagged the winner in a pulsating tussle before leaving the pitch on a stretcher late on." The Scotsman

"It is going to be very difficult, but we have two Old Firm games at home and if we play like we did in the first half then we have a chance,"

Gordon Strachan

This is true. We didnae play that badly in the first half. Oor fears that we would be out muscled in the middle never came to pass. Hartley proved that he gets the best from Scott Broon and oor defence and forwards showed they were up for the physical elements of the derby. It's fair to say that I canny remember a Hun standing oot in that first half.

In fact, I must take the blame for the goal. I had just stated the fact that Thompson had done nothing and was lucky to be still on the park when the feeling on deja vu came over me. When the ball nestled behind the HG I had seen a goal similar before. The first goal in the 5-1 game. Fergiehuns run went unchecked that day as well.

After that all the stats and previous pointed to we would struggle to get back in. Der Hun have scored first in 24 games this season and won 23 of them in the process. On the other hand Celtic have lost the first goal 8 times this season and only came back to win three times. Added to that the fact the Huns are on a domestic unbeaten run of 20 odd games unbeaten- their best since 72-73- and that they huvnae lost a derby game when they scored first in 15 years meant a draw was the best we could have hoped for.

Them scoring mean't that their gameplan was executed perfectly. We were restricted to lumping long aimless balls as the desperation set in and ever 50/50 or loose ba' fell to a light blue jersey. Still, I don't think they had any outstanding performers and their victory was comfortable mainly due to oor failings rather than them being outstanding.

Like Dundee Utd and Aberdeen before them they proved that sitting in and letting us have the ba' is the tactic that works against us. They let oor CB and LB have the ba' safe in the knowledge that we will do sod all wie it. Mark Aiden and Naka out the game and you have us sussed.

That's when we hope the manager does something ootside the box. Go three up top or change the formation. Instead in true limited coach fashion his subs are always like for like. Hartley for Robson and McDonald for JVOH was not going to change the course of the game. What aboot leaving JVOH on, taking off Naka and bringing on McDonald? Take a risk, go 4-3-3 even take of a defender and go 3-4-3.

So can we take any positives from the game? Well, that is the best we have played against them for a while. Still a below par performance but, again, it was in line wie recent performances and was not a surprise that we were poor in the last third. The performance from Hinkel proved he is a decent signing, Hartley showed why he must play, Caldwell played well and the HG wisnny troubled.

Still to many under par performances and the question whether we will raise it to win the remaining two games against them is still as far away from being answered as ever. In fact the question must be will we ever look like scoring against them again. GS has another unwanted record in four games wieoot a goal against them.

We are now relying on the fitba' ghods. The stats and figures prove this Hun team, while being lucky and boring, know how to win games and disnny look like being found oot anytime soon. We only have oorselves to blame for being in this position.

We need to hope that there house of cards collaspes starting wie a hefty defeat to Sporting Club of Portugal......

As I said it's the hope.....

Forza

The only `out the box` thinking came from our goalie near the end. I only saw the goal on TV and relied on radio for the game. (Get your grievance against Celtic out in the open Murdo.) We had to keep hoping for a goal.
The next two matches are now the target, losing derby games is bad enough but Celtic have to win the games before and after the match.
Guessing from my impressions of the game.
*Boruc wasn`t overworked. A couple of good saves near the end.
*Hinkel, settling in but I`m waiting for him to take off!
Naylor, still tries hard but we need better.
Caldwell, tries hard but not a solid defender.
McManus has mad moments, why?
Naka neat and tidy
Hartley tidy but too deep
Brown effort without brains
*McGeady gets isolated, perhaps he`s now too good for the wing
JVoH doesn`t dominate
*Samaras is a player

* definitely can stay
I don`t usually do this! :-/

A fair few other players are good enough too but may be off form.
Just thinking, are Celtic the only team in Scotland that doesn`t set the team out to stop the opposition?
I think we know the answer. :-)

Liked your article Kevin - no moaning about MIBs or the SFA or the Undignified Cheats XI.
Well done!

Our problems are exactly that - OURS. Self inflicted. Only ourselves to blame for what will be a bare cupboard come May.

Wattie has proved he is a better manager than wee Gordon, although both have their limitations.

They both have a plan A.
Neither have a plan B and C isn't even on their alphabet.

The problem for us, is that Wattie's plan A works when it matters. Wee Gordon's doesn't.

He had a chance last weekend to go for a 3-4-3 against Gretna. He could have least given it a try, given Wattie something to think about. But he rolled out his 4-4-2 that every SPL manager and his dug knows how to prepare for.

I think the only thing that GS has in his favour is that he is still on a steep learning curve and will improve.
It's just unfortunate he's doing his apprenticeship at Celtic Park.

I must admit I admire your stance (I think Ian is up there alongside you), still hoping.

I am more pessimistic due to the fact that it's out of our hands. Nobody, as you know, is going to do us any favours.

The only hope I have left for this season is that they don't do anything decent in Europe - if that happened: I think I would become a fitba' atheist!

Ianinjesi: Your impressions are spot on. I canny remember Arfur having as quiet a day at Ipox for sometime. Yes, we could have lost a late goal- when we went a bit gung ho- but he had nothing to do.

Hinkel was oor most productive wing player. At least he overlaps unlike the charlatan on the otherside. It’s no surprise to me that I feel he is already the best full back at the club. On the left side I’m looking for Nayls to be dropped and hopefully the now fit Willo or JJPD returning.

I can say Scott Brown had a decent game yesterday but…..how can I when he missed two sitters?

We dinny give the ball to Aiden or Naka in the correct areas, they are always too deep when the rec the ball. Again, yesterday was probably the most conistant they have been against the orcs. Get them one on one wie Broadfoot and Papac.

Again yesterday we played intelligent balls to the front me in the first period. After half time made it it easy for ugly betty and old faither time. Into the channels for Sammy to chase.

Sixtaeseven: I don’t blame the MIB for oor failings. We should have enough to get by them. I for oe feel the bookings were correct yesterday, felt Thompson should have been booked for persitant fouling before he was, there should have been at least 5 mins injury time after Thompson took a dive and he should have been ordered off for the dive.

Nothing else. If Brown would have went doon in the first period it would have been interesting to see if the MIB gave the pen but……Brown never went doon.

I disagree that Walter is a better manager. Both as you say are limited. Both will get found out- see Big Feck. But yu don’t need to be a genius to win things in Scotland when you are in charge of Celtic or Rangers.

What bugged me more aboot yesterday was not the starting 11 but Skippy was pictured putting his shinpads on at around 53 mins. He did not come on until the 79th minute. Barry Robson was shouted over- need to take this from a guy that was at the game as the Tv never showed this- 60th minute and didnae arrive to the 81st.

11 and 9 mins to change a game? Bolloxs, that is just bolloxs/

Seemingly, when Robson was coming on GS told the fourth official to hang back and told Robson to sit back doon, Robson told the fourth official to get the board back up as he was going on..apparently GS was raging at this but before he could do anything Robson was at the edge of the pitch.

Lack of respect?

I disagree I think GS served his apprenticeship at Cov and Southampton. I believe he is what he is and won’t change.

Yes, I don’t expect any favours but I am hopeful but the stats and the fact they are on their best run for over 30 years mean I might need to just take this one on the chin and say they deserve it….sometimes things are written in the stars

I disagree that Walter is a better manager.
Kevin are you saying then that GC is better than WS?
I know the wee man likes stats, but even he would have trouble explaining away nada goals in 360min.

Smith knows every trick in the book & for me GS has been on an exponential learning curve since he came to us.
I don't know what his European experience was at Cov or SouthHamp, but it couldn't have been much.

Smith has his dressing room on fire. I'm not so sure I can say the same about ours.

I don't expect he will be here next season, I think he knows himself that his time with us is up, and he will walk before he's pushed.

The next trick is getting in somebody who will take us forward.

Can we afford to gamble on somebody from the same managerial level (experience wise) as a pre-Tic GS? Somebody like Keane, McGhee, Lambert...
I think we would need to go further afield to get an experienced coach with decent credentials in Europe cos I don't think anybody worthwhile in the EPL would come up to toytown.

Shit, I didn't want to start thinking about all that crap until the end of the season...
I'll stop bugging you all with my rant there.

Anybody notice that PLG picked up a trophy yesterady and so guarantees PSG UEFA fitba next year? Always liked him as a manager.
:o)

Only just learned that DU had 2 players red carded yesterday on the 90min mark...
Don't know why that should bother me, but as they say in the Sunday Post "It makes ye think".

I`ve just watched the highlights on the BBC site. That was a pen and a red card for the tackle on Brown. A blind man in a fog would have seen that. As for the Thomson dive, that was a disgrace. I didn`t realise how much restraint you were showing by not blaming the ref!
As for the Dundee United red cards, the first one was definite, and the second was stupid and definite too.

Still raging

Shopping in Tesco's today in Rugby, saw three that's THREE HUNSs wearing their colours. Where the feck have they been the last 4 years since I moved back to Rugby?

The dwarf managed Southampton in one UEFA cup tie , runners up for the FA cup final ensured qualification. Lost one-nil over two legs I think to Steau Bucharest.

Hail hail to you all anyway.

Speriamo di si! :-)
Our old friends Donald MacVicar and Hugh Dallas both agree that Kevin Thomson has no case to answer. He did not dive! He was trying to win a free kick! :-)
I was just starting to look ahead, too!

"I can see why people are saying I was trying to win a foul. But that's not cheating."

Aye it is.

Someone has commented on the HuddleBoard that the reason why Thompson went down, according to radio Clyde, is that Samaras's shin is harder than his, who was trying not to get injured so went down - not looking for a penalty in anyway.

Of course not - that would be errrr cheating wouldn't it. The 'quintessentially British Club' would not stoop to such tactics, unlike those tarriers from across the City.

Dignity brother bears

ianinjesi said...

They are going crazy on CQN! I think that Radio Clyde had Wishart and Johnstone defending Thomson and people are looking for justice. It won`t happen! Remember with Lenny? The media gave us no room to move. Our club is guilty, our players are guilty, our fans are guilty! We deserve this, we are NOT the people!
Our supporters are criticising Gordon Strachan but consider what he and our club are up against. Thomson dives, Boruc stands over him shouting and Novo comes up and pushes Boruc. What does the ref do in front of the Copland Road end? Books Boruc, now that is brave refereeing.
That stadium is a hell hole full of horrible people.
We know all these things, we have to keep cool. Deep breathing and relax.

I like stats maeself but I find it hard to back ma opinion that GS is no better or worse than El Cairdo when these “stats” are trotted oot….

7 SPL’s, 3 Scottish Cups, 5 league Cups- makes you sick- against 2 SPL’s, 1 Scottish Cup, 1 League Cup and a relegation…

Stats mean sod all:-)

His only European experience was one game wie The Saints…….got royally pumped from Burcherest.

Sure the wee man would pass it off as “missed chances” the fact we huvnae scored in four games against them.

As I said some months ago, I heard the manager has already said he was leaving and a certain ex-Hoop, from a Celtic background and will visit CP on Saturday has already agreed to take the joab.

But…..I would rather that we task the risk on some up and coming young European manager and gie him 5 years. We have to find the next Jose and Arsene: they are out there we just need the balls to go and get them.

Surely there is a manager in France, Holland, Spain, Italy that is in charge of a smallish team or a number two who would jump at the chance of CL football, a UEFA Cup budget and a chance to get to the EPL after a few seasons?

But that is for the close season.

Baldy: Yes, they have been out in force. I said to one this morning have you got yer hun underpants on as well….

Mon the Verde-e-Brancos….

Kevin Thomson is a cheating c*nt whose comments have made me add him to the LOTW hate list…..

Ian: I agree wie your comments....

But remember, us Taigs canny have that DIGNITY.....

Ian Wirght was decent tonight between 6pm and 7.30, nae radio clyde for me....

I am getting severely pissed off at the continued silence from Celtic Park concerning recent "events".

Sure, it goes without saying, we all love the Tic and, at the end of the day, we just want to see our team playing decent fitba' and picking up a trophy or two. I can handle losing a game, and will be the first to hold my hand up and praise a better team beating us. No problem there.

But, there is a machiavellian level of deceipt and manipulatation going on at the minute, and it doesn't look as though it's going to stop any time soon.

There surely comes a point when this "turning the other cheek" crap has to be put on hold.

I had a pretty neutral view when Dr John came in: I thought that at the very least we would have somebody to defend our corner. Up till now, he makes Naka look like a pitbull.

Hey, John! Wakey, Wakey!!!
