Celtic, Put Celtic In The Dock.

I shouldnae really do it but for ma sins i listened to part of the radio phone in's to night.

I knew it was wrong as Celtic today issued this statement meant for the travelling hordes that will fill Westfield this Saturday, allowing the meeja outlets to report it like this

Now, while i don't mind this statement, we have the Celtic Social Mission Statement, we needed to be seen to do something in the wake of Inverness; when i read it i was a bit annoyed by the wording, or the use of one word. The word sectarian.

That word allows us to be linked by the media to a team that the only link we have with is that we share the same city. We have no cultural or heritage links in fact the history and founding of both clubs couldnae be mair chalk and cheese.

The use of the sectarian word means that Celtic have put oor fans on trial for sectarian signing when sectarian singing is not a problem within oor support. Political, i have no problems with, the add on's and certain songs have too stop or they will damage the club but we are anything but sectarian.

Tonight the airwaves were polluted by views that Celtic brought on themselves by including the line that we are a non sectarian club.Including this line makes it look like we are sectarian.

Why did they feel the need to say this? Outside influences or just a toeing of the party line thus diluting, further, their own image of the club they are try to make a global brand.

We know we are a non sectarian club, we have been for 119 years.

Today has been the perfect example that we are guilty, withoot trial, withoot evidence but by association only.

Time to disassociate oorselves from this Old Firm tag once and for all.

Forza

correct ian...it's a sad reflection of this country that the biggest news doon south is the fact that r*ngers are being reported for bigoted chanting.

i can just see the puzzled faces of netheads reading the reports...are they still in the dark ages up there they will be asking.

celtic had a chance to get away from that view, but i feel they toed the party line...they let us down.

have ago aboot the political songs, fine but to drag us into the sectarian thing....oor ain club???

fitbaw reflects the society we live in like it or not.

Evening bhoys.

Nothing to add to what Mr G said, but just experimenting with my new google log-in.

By the way, just watched the BBC highlights package. half an hour of action and no talking heads. Good stuff, but that presenter's voice does my head in.

Kevin,
I can`t imagine that you`ll like what that wee journalist Chick Young has written on BBC website. There`s a link at 00.02 9th August on CQN.
Keep a hand free to support your lower jaw! :-)

Ian

Your line 'Mer mince' on the last thread has had me laughing at my screen. That is going to be my phrase of the day now to use on the kids.

It's true that the Rangers /sectarianism link has been highly aired down in the English media for a while now. However Beasley's report of the chants he suffered in Montenegro have diluted the story somewhat.

It seems that concerning marketing and by association, the board are unable or afraid to distance ourselves from the 'Old Firm' tag. I thought that we were beginning to but this letter just lobs us in the same boat as them.

Shame really as we need to really be seen as an inclusive club/ support but through this action the media have latched onto this and now anyone who logs onto Newsnow will have their stereotypical views of us reinforced, just by looking at the headlines.

Baldymeister,
I`m pleased that you had a laugh, now I can`t write anything sensible.
The Old Firm tag is probably not used by fans of the clubs but the media pundits use it as a stick to beat us with. Unfortunately there are people who support Celtic and are blatantly sectarian. The important thing seems to be that these people keep quiet at the game. That is not unreasonable. There are a lot less examples of racism in society but probably just as many racists.

typical mer mince from the paisley h*n, sorry buddie...an article, which backs up ma view of how this statement makes us look.

one thing....are uefa watching us and have we ever been reported to uefa...again wee chicko disnny do facts does he....

baldy the board are scared to make a stand...it's something we as a support have to push...starting on saturday...no matter how much goading the fawkirk fans do...90mins of wullie maley wie nae add on's only eh?

pujol- never saw the highlight program but i think it will be the ex deacon blue drummer...he wisnny a very guid drummer either..

The card display in the photo was at the Lisbon Lions stand and I think that is the only display that has worked for a Saturday game. The Jock Stein stand has too many people who arrive late and use the paper to make litter.
Bravo the people of the LLstand!

ian- yes, guys who follow celtic will have maybe sectarian views, some maybe racist views or facist views but.....i have nevered heard them aired on mass at a celtic game.

fantastic you have hit the nail on the heid...we are not saying we are whiter than white we are just saying as a support we don't have a sectarian problem.

maybe you should e-mail wee chico wie that....

btw- the h*ns do use the OF tag...see they need us to be linked to make their hatrid relevant...

'Mer Mince' from me

Had a quick look at this earlier:

Guardian Blog

Looks like the link was put on a FF board and they jumped in to have a go.

It's interesting that they always have to associate themselves with us, while we are trying so hard to get away from them

Re- the TEFAL. Do you think that the card displays work better in the LL stand as the people who sit there tend to be those with 'special season tickets' or have just bought tickets direct, rather than those in the JS, who are perhaps rightly or wrongly, more likely to be full season ticket holders and so less likely to be getting in early as they already have pre- match routines? Ie. Pub till 2.55p, then run up the stairs like mad once you hear the shouting at the pre-match huddle.

baldy- what a link...what an article and no mention of us once...must have been a non scot that wrote it.:-)

no wonder the ff brigade are going ape over it..wonder if the guardian has ever been so damning regarding millwall...

the displays...there has only ever been one in the stand where i sit and the one pictured- thanks to ma wee sis in law for the picture and congarts on your exam results- was that one.

i sit in the LL stand and you call the fans demographic in that stand correctly...it is now mainly a family section and maybe moving the displays to that end will make them more successful.

one of the worst ones was when we were getting the league trophy last year- i will post a photo- it looked terrible.

was impressed wie the banner display on sunday and at the last glesga derby..mair banner displays for me...

baldy- u will need to teach me how to do the links link that...it took me weeks to work oot how to change the comments to hail hails...
