Lotw Diary- AGM and Hypocrisy

The AGM is usually a tin pot affair, a staged managed showboat for the so-called “wee man” to air his views. Usually this is aboot lack of steak pies, lack of loo roll and lack of money for a left back, right winger, striker or goalie.

Yesterdays held indoor, for the first time, I think since the good times rolled in, was interesting and not predictable due to the appointment of John Reid as oor new chairmen.

Now, my views on this are- Celtic shouldnae have touched such a controversial figure wie a barge pole. His involvement- there is no need to be as pedantic over his actual involvement, as some are being- in a black period of decision-making in British politics is there for all to see, here. I’m not going to into the in’s and outs of his voting record or if he had direct involvement, click the link and read his part.

Make no mistake he has blood on his hands- like all the Cabinet during this period- and no matter how many ill informed posters, callers and bloggers, who have had him firing the opening shot in Iraq, can change that fact. His appointment was always going to cause ructions as the historical genetic make up of the Celtic support means us and politics go hand in hand.

What has really annoyed me is the reaction to certain articles and comments that have been posted over the last few days when fans who protested or voiced concerns have been called lefties, commies, students, wooha’s, bedsheet protesters, an embarrassment to the club and to end all crimes those bastards that want to sing war music (sic) or rebel songs at fitba.

So, all those who protested all look like Rick from the Young Ones but instead of a Cliff Richard fascination they have a Wolftone one.

I will quote the aforementioned Mr. Reid and his comments yesterday.

"I have to respect the right of everyone at this club to have their own ideas, background, religion and politics. That is what has made this club different from others, but we leave background, religious division and political division at the door of this club.

Maybe some should take heed of the words the man they are defending has said. But then in the consumer dissemination that the Celtic support has wandered into post Fergus, any view that is different from what the PLC is peddling to the sheep is up for ridicule and is not Celtic minded.

This club, we all love, widnae have survived in the pre-Fergus era if the ethos Mr Reid talked aboot had been forgotten. The Celtic support has always had differences due to the politically based and passionate beliefs. Today these differences are not used to show strength or passion but for one up man ship and points scoring for egotistical keyboard punchers.

What would Brother Walfrid make of it all? Well that is a hypothetical question……

Well, I have my own ideas, background, religion and politics that I will leave at the portal of this blog BUT I will say this, I think that guy who plays for Scotland with a 6 on the front, a six on the back and a 6 on his shorts has an uncanny talent when it comes to choosing numbers and is an ugly bazza to boot.
He's nuthing compared to that wee Novo, but, who is a veritable stankmonster.

The game tonight should be worth watching - just hope that Croatia are up for it.

What's the news with JVoH? If his hammies have gone again, he won't last the winter and a quality frontman becomes a priority signing in January.

Re: The quote in your article, did JR actually add "unlike some other clubs" when he talked about leaving baggage at the door?

Won't even comment on Dr Findlay and how quick the media are to leech on to her casebook. They're not so reactive on the BJ stuff, as if we're surprised.

Roll on Saturday...

Sixtae,
Croatia are in London for the Christmas shopping!
I think I agree with you both on the Celtic trust thingy. How come you can buy CDs of these nasty songs in HMV?
Can`t see me doing a PhD,all these docs have had their brains squeezed into submission! :-)

This is the full interview wie Jeanette Findlay.....Me? I think she has worded her answers very badly, she was caught by suprise but should have known better.

The damage done is widespread but i'm glad that Celtic and other fan groups have distanced themselves from these misguided answers and almost naive ootlook at how it would be seen.

For the record. Word for word (bar a few ums & ahs).

Woman presenter "The new Chairman of Celtic, the former Home Secretary John Reid, was called a "war criminal" by a fan at the clubs AGM. Mr Reid was in the cabinet when Britain took part in the invasion of Iraq in 2003. Jeanette Findley is Secretary of the Celtic Trust which promotes the interests of fans & small share-holders. A bit strong Jeannette?"

Jeanette Findley "Well certainly that wasn't the Trust's spokesperson that made that remark & I don't think it was necessary to be that inflammatory. Our opposition to John Reids appointment as Chair of Celtic is certainly to do with his role, his leading role, he wasn't just a member of the Cabinet, he was Defense Secretary, his leading role in relation to what many believe is an illegal & immoral war. Our view is that if you are going to be a public face of a club like Celtic which, I don't want to sound like an advert for a well known store, its more than just a PLC & its infact more than just a football club. Its a social & cultural institution & a source of identity for many of the fans who support it. We don't want somebody who is really forever, for better or worse, is forever going to be associated with that humanitarian disaster"

Woman presenter "But before John Reid, before he had that position, how deeply into the professional & personal history's of the Chairman did you go?

Jeanette Findley “We actually only came into being, the Celtic Trust, just about the same time Brian Quinn became the Chairman so this is the first..."

Woman presenter "Hypothetically, how deeply into a persons professional & personal history do you think you should go?"

Jeanette Findley "We made some general points about the search process for Board members in general, we actually have some views about the whole process & again for the reasons I've just outlined about the need for the type of club that Celtic is, we think the search criteria should be much broader than what would be the norm for a PLC. So, for instance, Celtic was founded as a charitable institution & we think they should be looking at people who have a leading role in the charitable & social activism sector. Thats not to say they don't need professional qualifications & expertise that are necessary to run a business of that size, we have looked beyond...."

Nicky Campbell "Its a fascinating area Jeanette which are you most uncomfortable with - & this is a point which I'm sure will occur to some people - the pro-terrorist songs that regrettably are still heard from some Celtic fans or the appointment of Dr Reid? Which causes you most concern?"

Jeanette Findley "I take a different view from you on the so-called pro-terrorist songs that you've just outlined. I have tried to explain about the nature of Celtic as a club. It was founded to help the poor Irish immigrants to Scotland. Although it has never been an exclusive club, many of the support are descendants of those people. They may take a particular view on the the history of what happened in Ireland which is different from many other people, so I don't call those pro-terrorist songs."

Woman presenter "Do you not think that Celtic, & perhaps Rangers too, or Scotland generally really has had its fill of the political debate within what is essentially a sporting club. Hasn't it had enough of that? Hasn't history told us that this is dead-end?"

Jeanette Findley "I think what history tells us is that it is facile to say politics & sport will ever be separated. Throughout history, sporting events are used often as a means of expressing political views or political identities. I don't see anybody criticizing Barcelona for being essentially the national club of the Catalan people. But somehow or another when it comes to Celtic, there is something wrong with that. I think people need to take a wee step back."

Nicky Campbell "If I can get back to what some people call the pro-terrorist songs, I'm not talking about the Fields of Athenry, I'm talking about actually chanting “the IRA” & stuff?"

Jeanette Findley "You are talking about songs about the IRA but again, many of those songs are songs from what was essentially a war of independence going back right into the 1920s infact going back over a hundred years."

Nicky Campbell "People who have lost relatives who have been blown up, blown to pieces & murdered by the IRA find that as offensive as you might find Dr Reids appointment, can you not see that?"

Jeanette Findley "Well im sure the parents of Peter McBride, who was murdered by 2 British soldiers who were then reinstated under John Reids watch will also find this offensive. There's death on both sides"

Nicky Campbell "We hear where you're coming from. Thanks very much. Secretary of the Celtic Trust "

the bolded question should have had here defending us to the hilt not incriminating us indirectly. I'm sure she meant what she said but not the why she said it....
