View From The Wing- Caley 3 Celtic 2

Gordon, shudders as the ghost of Jim Jeffries passes through his body

It was like an episode of "Life on Mars". For 10 minutes, i thought i had been knocked doon by a Ford Cortina and transported back to the early nineties...big Mick had become the bastard offspring of McGuigan, McNally, Whtye and Cascarino- he did play CB for Brady a few times-and oor goalie had morphed into the hybrid of Muggleton and Marshall...oh stuff it and Kerr.

Since the begining of time, well ma time, i canny remember us NOT having bombscares at the back..it's as traditional as the Hoops, as turkey at xmas and yer wife not talking to you after a two day bender when you forget where you live. Even MON big CB's had bombscare moments....and one of them is still hanging around wie 30,000 reason why he canny come back into the side.

Those seem to view Bobo Blade wie selective memory, which comes wie nostalgia. The Lisboa Lions are the same, people forget that they had bad games...but Bobo has all of a sudden become Maldini, Baresi or suchlike if you listen to the bar-room boozers bawbags and phone in tubes. The seem to forget that the big fellow is ponderous on the baw and rash in the tackle. He is an easy option to cure the ills of away games. Canny keep a clean sheet? "Just bring back Bobo that wee Ginja husnae got a clue" they bleat.....wonder if they remember Bratislava and Motherwell..THE two games when GS decided he didnae fancy him.....

Over the last 14 months, they only constant in the run has been Mick. He has been the only EVER present. GS perferred partnership, the partnership that gained oor last clean sheet, is Mick and Caldwell. For what i can remember this partnership has only played a handful of times since THAT game at Westfield...this partnership is limited but honest..but IMO the fact that, this season esp, the constant chopping and changing of the defence has not help matters...BUT THE SCHOOL BHOY ERRORS yesterday must rank as the worst on this run....

I like Mick, he is honest, reads the game well- near post reading of the game is fantastic- but he is a typical Scottish limited ability CB who will make mistakes. Apart from Donestk and yesterday has he had many howlers? I don't think he has and the people shouting for him to be dropped should really get a grip and look at the bigger picture...which is Mick is the best CB at the club and will remain the best CB at the club as the money we have to spend won't get any better unless oor scouts come up trumps and find the new "Kaiser" in Outer Mongolia.

But, comedy errors and a goalie who has been dodgy over the last few weeks, c'mon, the pen should have been saved and also their second goal, werent the only cause of the defeat. We will start wie the MIB, Alan Freeland. He changed the game by awarding the penalty before half time.

Elvis, was caught wie a simple baw over the top and decided to let it run to the dodgy goalie. He used the well worn tactic of putting himself between the man and the baw. A tactic he has used to great effect, and wie NO punishment, in a blue, sky blue, orange and marroon....So how come oor Elivs gets punished for it in a green and white jersey....paranoid moi?.....and how come he wisnny sent off if it was a foul?

Mr Freeland and his other MIB's decided then to chop off an onside goal, it was close, when the senkie had brought the game back to 2-2. A goal that would HAVE changed the course of the game. That brings us to the other incidents, which brings Mr Freelands incompitence and inconsistancy that pollutes oor game.

Two weeks ago panto-villian Gary Caldwell was punished for a push in the box, right so IMO, against the jam farts. On Sunday TWICE JVOH was pushed in the back while trying to get his Dutch noggin on the end of crossses. Again, if it is a pen one week...it's surely one the next...you would think? Nae, not according to Mr Freeland and would i be wrong to mention the green and white jerseys again?

Also, to balance ma paranoia up, i didnae think the senkie boy should have got sent off. ALL I ASK FOR IS CONSIsTANCY......but not consistant shite.

But....we were masters of oor own downfall. 2-0 up to 3-2 doon. Last 20 odd minutes against 10 men. Humilation in the Highlands....hell, yeah. Thing is, the nature of this collaspe didnae suprise me one little bit. From brutal in Bratislava to calamitis in Clyde, via all sort of shockers and, maybe worse of all, rank against r*ngers, nae back bone or liftupability in his teams is as common as lastminutewinability....UNPREDICTABLE can sum up GS reign.

For the last 20 minutes against senkie, we werent cute enough to cut them open. We didnae have the streetwise-ness to drag the senkie defence all over the place. Oor tactics, the tactics managers develop when the seige mentality of a Coventry or a Southampton, a menatlity bourne through working wie inferiour players who are playing against better players, something that in Scotland we dinny have to worry aboot, of the long baw is NEVER going to work for long spells against teams as honest as the senkie.

We ended up that ragged that oor formation, sort of resembled a Sunday pub team. It was a 3-0-7 in the last period, we NEVER picked up ANY second baw that oor aimless punts into the box forced clearances from. The long baw..the Hail Mary....can be used when you are DESPERATE....but not when there is a long period of the game left. Last 5 minutes yes, last 25 minutes nah, we should be BETTER than that.

We canny fault the senkie or the result. Yes, we had a few chances and the MIB's are getting a warm welcome in their pubs, clubs, lodges, workplaces and SFA corridors this week but make nae mistake...this result was OOR doing....we canny deny the senkie their GREATEST EVER result against us....and one of most embarrassing.

Not that it stops oor manager saying differently."We had all the possession, all the chances and all the decisions going against us," "We feel a bit hard done by. They took their chances, but we should have won that game quite easily." he said wieoot any hint of embarressment or feeling like Jim Jeffries being visited wie the ghost of Christmas past and screaming "Bah Humbug" at orphaned weans.

Is it any wonder that some Celtic fans, wonder what he is on at times? If the signing of Adam Virgo wisnny enough to convince that he lost the plot, his meanderings and meeja dealings really do leave us feeling like dragging him to watch the re-runs on Celtic Tv and playing keepie uppy wie his crown jewels while screaming "Guid professionals, right guid players...are ye watching this....are ye asking santa for new fullbacks, a centreback, a decent goalie....a plan B....a taxi for Elvis....."

We should tie him to a chair like that scene in the Clockwork Orange and make him watch re-runs of the terrible performances of this season....then drag him oot to face the press and make him just tell the truth...."We have been poor in a lot of games...."

It canny be that difficult to admit that, surely?

Lhads, normalish service has been resumed, busy…this week…huvnae had a social life for 50 weeks and now peepil think I’m guid company…bah humbug…

Aiden, has picked up dafted bookings but the one on Sunday was SHOCKING….yes we should allow oor baw players to be assulated….it’s in THE GAME…..

Ianinjesi- like sisters, THE SELLICK need to do it for ourselves, wie a little help from DD…new fullbacks please….a center back..Mr Santa…dinny want a bike.

Roberto Hooton, it’s awe Gary McAllisters fault these Cafu suggestions. I suppose world soccer couldnae have called him “An average thug type player that is ugly and typifies the sh*te r*ngers produced from their orcs lair in Auchenbowie”

Scott Brown, like his energy and drive needs to find his grab the game by the baws form that made us pay over 4 big ones for him….maybe we are asking too much….

Sixtaeseven- we should be able to showboat at 2-0 against Inversenkie…..

The defense is taking a fair bit of stick at the moment, but I think we put ourselves under a lot of pressure by giving the ball away too easily in midfield.

I knew that our inability to hold onto the ball is one of our big failings in Europe, but it wsn't until recently I noticed that it's also a big problem in the bread & butter games.

As you pointed out Kevin, the number of balls cleared by the defense that get picked up by the opposition and come straight back in again is attrocious.

We are definitely missing Naka. Naylor as well come to that.
Guys that can hang on to the ball, look for the decent pass, and generally steady the ship.

Meanwhile the likes of Hartley, Donati, JiriJay and Brown need to get to grips and start controlling the game. We need some decent performances before we next meet the hun. If we want a big physical presence to counter the likes of Cousin and McCulluck, Bobo could be a good shout. A don't want to see our bhoys stretchered off again. Also if we are going to pick up 9 cards, this time it will be FOR something.

Looking forward to the Hibs game, should be a cracker!
Skoosh can showboat all he wants when were 3 up!!!

Hibs on Saturday is a big match and hopefully the support will be there to back the team. A grand day out would do me.
(Kevin, you can call me Ian):-) The point I was making about Brown is that Celtic are calling his bluff. He was big enough to try to bad mouth Lenny but NL was a consistent player for Celtic over a number of seasons. To be fair, Scott did use enough energy to cover half a season in the Scotland v Ukraine match.
Changes for Saturday? I`d look to O`Dea and Jarosik to get closer to the pitch but who knows? It`s only Wednesday!

i still think bobo is the best centre-half we have on our books and the fact he has not got a sniff since last boxing day is shocking.

it's not thru nostalgia either as he had way more good games than bad games and never let us down versus the huns.

i don't care if he has his limitations, he can defend which comes in handy when u are a defender. we play in the spl, which requires big solid centre-half's to combat the other teams physical presence.

reg the artmedia and motherwell games balde didn't play v motherwell it was varga and mcmanus that day.

i feel sorry for caldwell at times as i think he does an ok job at right-back seen as he is a centre-half and never got skinned by anyone in the ch league whilst being out of position.

once we get players fit again or sign new full-backs hopefully, if balde isn't going to play then i think mcmanus and caldwell are the best partnership we have.

i actually thought elvis had been playing well since returning from injury but struggled on sun a bit and was as slow as a week in the jail in the incident leading to their penalty.

need maximum points from hibs, dundee utd and gretna before we meet the huns and hopefully they slip up before then too.

u still haven't told us about thommo kev!!!!

Sixtaeseven- The gieing the baw away, against better teams it’s like gieing them a goal a start… in the SPL sometimes it’s a sign of gallusness- trying the world cup baw- or just lack of clarity when choosing the CORRECT baw…..

Massimo Donati, is a master of both. Now, this guy has ability and has the effort of ANY Scottish born TIM I have seen..but sometimes his choice of baw and also his lack of team mates reading his baw lets US doon.

How many times have a seen him play a baw oot wide for a full back that is NEVER there?????

Sometimes I think the midfield to quote D, pass the baw for passing sake and that plays us into trouble..i.e the baw ends up back at the CB and gets hoofed to naeone….

Also, der hun are not confident…IF WE KEEP the baw their physical beastiness willnae bother us…only set plays we need to worry aboot…..

Ian- Changes for Sat? I really wonder where Jiri has went even though I agreed after the St Mirren game that he should have been rested….

Seven- quite correct, I forgot that it only took GS one game to realise Bobo was a coo…only kidding before I start world war 3….

But can we really advocate a CB returning to face der hun after REALLY BEING TOLD he was not the managers cup of tea?

That would be like Riordon starting against der hun…..

The abuse dished oot to Caldwell and Sno, at games this season has been SHOCKING…..even in the dark auld days naeone in the hoops got abuse….maybe we abused them on the bus going home but at the game…….NO NO NO

“they wanted me to slag Caldwell and I said NO NO NO”

honest player doing an honest joab…..

I think Mcmanus and O'Dea is the best partnership we have for central defense. However, with the lask of full backs at the moment, that isn't an option.

But a back line of Caldwell Mcmanus Bobo O'Dea could be worth a try in the matches leading up to the hun.

However, we all know that Elvis will be first on the team sheet

Kevin, not sure if I agree/understand with your analysis of reasons for us losing the ball or Donati's passing ability - but it's a bit early in the morn yet

As I said before I do not believe that we have had the personnel in midfield to deal with hard running attacking midfielders.

It caught us out against Newcastle in the pre-season and the same on Sunday with Black's performance running straight through us. No one is picking the ball up or makingthe necessary interventions that Lenny or Lambo wee making 4/5 years ago. This was the same issue I raised since Clyde.

Another problem is no matter who we have playing at CB is the Zonal Defence system. It does not work with our personnel. We have 6 British style CBs who would be comfortable tracking and challenging their men rather than defending a zone. None of our CBs are of the Lucio, Agger type of Natural Athlets with a natural 1.5m spring. Consequently they look leaden footed every time we are trying to defend a corner, yet can comfortably attack corners when we are at the other end, where they get a run at the ball. Additionally dumping the Zonal Defence nonsense may allow JVOH to play up front rather than having to track back constantly to fulfil an defensive role at the wrong end for his strengths.

Next no matter who our full backs are, they are incapable of cutting out crosses. Again an issue as it means that we are always having to rely on the last lines of defense, Artur and the CBs - putting more pressure upon them as a result. Telf, Nails, JJPD are all guilty of this as were Mo and Caldwell.

For me it's our formation and defensive tactics which are wrong as a team. The personnel (i.e the raw materials) are in the main there; bar FBs and a midfield enforcer. Tweak the basics and I reckon we'll be OK. However I don't believe WGS will as that its not his style.

Right my news. Gonna be a Daddy in July. Already told Mrs. Baldy that no child of mine will ever celebrate their birthday on the 12th. Will insist that it is enduced before this if necessary.

Hail hail one and all

Baldy- first things first congratulations to yerself and Mrs Baldy….now, the 12th of July is a lovely day….it’s mrsg birthday that day…HONEST….

ZONAL DEFENDING…..seven will confirm this is ma pet hate in the modern day coaching manual. You are quite correct, Scottish defenders canny play this, even other teasm struggle, look at Liverpool, but it seems to be the new black.

For me it makes player not take responsibility for stopping goals. It’s all kind off it’s not am baw guv….

Oor midfield- Hartley seems to do that sitting role well against better sides….not in the bread and butter where he seems to wander….

Full Backs- there lack of cutting oot baws from wide areas is a fault but one that seems in-keeping wie instructions…surely all of them couldnae tackle a fish supper?

Have to agree, after senkie on Sunday I was not to worried as the ingredients are there, GS says he knows how to sort it…it’s just hoping he does or the players get their fingers oot their arses and play to their capabilities….

Get the glaring faults sorted in Jan…..

Congratulations Baldymeister! Buona fortuna!
I`m always boring people with the stop the crosses patter. As for stopping the other team this can be the only thing to think about and we forget to attack! Let them worry about us!

Great news Baldy and Mrs Baldy too, obviously!
Bet you can't wait for the big date in 2008 (7/7 would be neat)!

Zonal defending, didn't know that's what we were doing - shows you how much I know
:o(

What kind of attacking are we doing? Whatever it is, I want to see plenty of it on Saturday!
