The first match I remember was a game at Celtic Park against Hearts that finished 1-1. A guy called Hamilton scored their goal: I remember cos a wee laddie from outer space behind me kept shouting about "Hammy" - outer space because I had never heard anything other than a Glesga accent in my life and that wee boy was a pure produce of Edinboro (I must have been about 8 or 9 at the time). Could have been Stevie Chalmers that scored for us?
The reason I distinctly remember that game and JJ playing is that my uncle had taken me to the stand for the first time (so it must have been my birthday or something). A couple of rows in front of us, a young woman, I presume JJ's girlfriend, was going banana's everytime he touched the ball.
I remember after the game, my uncle asked me if I enjoyed the game, I said "Aye, but I didn't think much of the wee gingernut on the wing". I think the JJ's ladyfriend had pissd me right off.
Don't know when that game was (circa 63?).
But I saw him play many times after. Sometimes he was mince, and would gets pelters, and often they would try to kick him off the park, but he never gave up and he would try and try again.
Many, many times tho, he would produce the magic and you knew you were watching somebody very, very special.
Never was lucky enough to see the wee man. Meet him once at a speaker’s night in Cowie miners welfare. He was their wie some Hun- Wullie Henderson I think- and it was a decent night wie JJ being a star.
Last time I saw him I was traveling to the Barrowlands to go and see The Doves when we passed a big black BMW on the M74, wee JJ was driving the motor and it looked so strange as the car was far far to big for this wee fellow sitting driving it. I’ve often thought that he must have had a booster seat to be able to see over the wheel.
He gave us a hearty wave and a massive cheeky grin…..
RIP.
Also it’s also the 12 years to the day since the Dunblane massacre as well an event, which brings back horrible memories for members of ma bus and me.

I will try to get back to you quicker than the Celtic ticket office.
LOTW is brought to you on a diet of decanted Buckfast, chips and gravy. Wie an added hint of French red wine and Midlands real ale.
